RTA 38 / 48
INTRODUCTION
There have been reports about actuator cams which shifted relative to the camshaft after several
thousand hours of operation on RTA 48 type engines.
If the firing and compression pressures are lower than the values given in the shop trial report,
please check the position of the corresponding cam, provided there are no other reasons for it.
Such reasons for a delayed functioning of the hydraulic actuated exhaust valve may be leakages at
the hydraulic actuator pump safety valve and non return valve, leakages at the pipe connection
because of indentations at the sealing surfaces, dirt in the system venting (throttle T 27536),
leakages because of dirt scratching at piston T 27528 or improper air cylinder drainage.
This Service Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective pages
or tables of the Service Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual, Maintenance
Manual or Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or Book.
Checking procedure:
(see as well Maintenance Manual, section 560/1a)
- Fit the setting device 94551. Use test mandrel 94554.
- Turn the engine crankshaft in such a way that the roller of the actuating pump rests on the base
circle of the cam.
- Set dial gauge to ”zero”.
- Turn the engine crankshaft until the actuating pump piston has been lifted by:
RTA 38 type engine 6.085mm.
RTA 48 type engine 7.606mm.
- Read the angle difference between B.D.C. (180 opposite T.D.C.) of the corresponding
cylinder and the actual position of the flywheel pointer (62.5° for the 125° cam or 57,5° for the
previous 115° cam in case of ”0” adjustments; see setting table). Please note that ”0”
adjustments can only be made with the tool 94424 delivered since 1987.
If one or more cams are found shifted, please proceed according to paragraph 2.
3. Actuator cam to be loosened (see encl. 420/3) and turn same into correct position
4. Put 3mm distance ring on to shaft towards the conical bush (see next page)
5. Mount tool 94424 and press in the conical bush together with the distance ring
(see encl. RTA-7/1)
7. Reassemble coupling flanges and camshaft segment (see encl. 420/2 and 420/1)
