Removal of pressure retaining valve 4
Introduction
It was discovered that the pressure retaining valve in the servo oil return piping
may cause exhaust valve timing problems at high engine loads. Therefore it has
been decided to remove the non-return valve, located in the pressure retaining
valve (3). The pressure retaining valve is also part of the servo oil return piping
(2), located near the free end side in the rail unit, see Figure 1.

Note:
Please use the manuals and drawings supplied with the engine.
To follow the given instructions how to remove the non-return valve which is built-
in the pressure retaining valve, some engine related documentation are required.

The actual removal procedure of the pressure retaining valve is described in two
chapters, depending on the RT-flex engine type. The first procedure is for RT-
flex50 engine types. The second procedure is related to RT-flex58, RT-flex60
and RT-flex68 engine types.
Pre-preparation check-list:
1. Make sure the required documentation and tools are ready.
2. The engine must be stopped.
3. The starting air valve must be closed and the starting air manifold must be
drained.
4. The turning gear must be engaged and all safety interlocks must be
functional.
5. Stop the servo oil service pump or control oil pumps.
It depends on the engine type respectively the rail unit and WECS system
execution, if the engine is equipped with a servo oil service pump or with
control oil pumps.
6. Stop the high pressure oil pump (crosshead oil pump).
7. Stop the low pressure oil pump (main lubricating oil pump).
8. Close the stop valve.
The location depends on the engine type:
– on RT-flex50/50-B/50-D engines location after the automatic servo oil filter,
– on all other RT-flex engines location before the automatic servo oil filter.
9. Wait for a while until the oil drains from the servo oil return piping and ensure
that the pressure in the servo oil rail drops to nearly 0 bar. The system can be
depressurised also by crack-opening the drain valve 4.72, see Figure 2.
Note
The drain valve 4.72 is NOT installed on RT-flex50, RT-flex50-B and RT-flex50-D
engines.
10. Remove all necessary rail unit covers to gain access to the pressure retaining
valve.

Work procedure:
1. Confirm that the pre-preparation work has been successfully completed.
2. Dismantle the pressure retaining valve housing. The valve is located inside
the rail unit, close to the free end of the engine.
3. Screw out the non-return valve from the valve housing and store it for the time
being.
4. Reassemble the pressure retaining valve housing with new gaskets on the
servo oil return piping.
5. Open the stop valve after the automatic servo oil filter.
6. Start the low pressure oil pump (main lubricating oil pump).
7. Start the servo oil service pump.
8. Check the piping system that it is fully tight and no leakage occurs. This can
be done by operating several times the exhaust valves or starting the injector

venting with the help of the flexView operating system. The flexView operating
system is located in the engine control room and on the local manoeuvring
stand. The test can be performed from either of the two locations.
9. If no leakage can be found after the tightening test, remove all used tools and
any other items not belonging to the rail unit. Close all rail unit covers and
then the engine is ready for normal operation again.
Note:
If the air spring was shut off for maintenance, make sure that it is ON again
before starting the low pressure oil pump (main lubricating oil pump).
