SUBJECT: GLOBAL CURRENTS AND THE WORLD LITERATURE

TOPIC: HOW MUCH LAND DOES A MAN NEED LEO TOLSTOY

1. The story of event start in a Russian village. A rich elder sister visits her younger sister who at
piece lives in the village. The elder sister insults her younger sister how she lives there. But the
younger sister said the money is cause of trouble all the time. Pahom the younger sister’s
husband ear droves. He’s a simple man; does farming that cause him relief that free from any
temptation He always dream of a land to far away from a Devil. But Pahom didn’t know that the
Devil hideous in the house and know what Pahom think that time.

2. Winter season the landlord decided to sell her own private property land. Pahom wants to
buy a new land. Unfortunately the Devil doesn’t argue with the negotiation so Pahom and his
wife only buy a 40 cm land. Pahom get excited because he never thought that someday he will
have own land.

3. Pahom is the landowner now. He can’t believe that it’s so hard to do the responsibility. His
neighbours let the animals gaze on his property and because he doesn’t have much experience
of that he let it slide. Until he can’t handle it anymore he complains to a District Court and

4. Pahom now accepted to a new village that his interested. He had a lot of memories there
with his elders. He let his kindness treat them for real such as foods and drinks. He so much
proud because of 125 acres he had makes him richer. However he thought that he had doesn’t
have enough soil for his farm. So he thinks some ways to find the solution of that carefully. He’s
way from the market to buy some of his needs. He think that didn’t slide this so he rent what
he needs for advancement.
5. Out of nowhere Pahom and his servant travel in Bashkir land. A kind-people who live in camp
tents and spend their time all-over the summer drinking, eating and enjoying what they had.

The Bashkirs wants to talk with Pahom. Unluckily they don’t understand Russian so they find a
translator who knows his language. Lately, Pahom formally give his gifts to them and the
Bashkirs repay his kindness that anything he dreamt off. So Pahom request their land, guess
what the Bashkirs reaction, they laugh and decided to tell Pahom choose how much lands he
wants.

6. They go to a Chief to approve their conversation and after they talk to the Chief, he agrees to
let Pahom take anywhere what he wants. Pahom wants to sign a paper; evidence for ownership
for him. Pahom think some way that if didn’t go to the same day as soon as possible he lose his
money. So Pahom used his strength to dig holes of the land and that time he encourages to got
a land he wants.

7. Pahom can’t sleep at night for the reason that he think how he plan after that day. He
imagines what if he accomplishes to own a lot of land that time. Before the dawn he has a
dream that the Chief laughing outside his tent and he know that the Chief become a dealer
about the Bashkir land and discover that the Chief and dealer is the same, who thought that he
saw a man lies in front of the devil and as he saw it clearly and nearer he shocked because he
saw himself. He wakes scared and shocked, after that he eager to let it pass because he focus
on his land.

8. Pahom and the Bashkirs go to steppe. He prepares something that they eat: a bread and
water he brings for them. As the day start, Pahom dedicated walks at the regular pace of land
and notice something that make him keep going. As the sun started to heat at the maximum of
it, Pahom makes him give up having some rest.
9. After what he does that day Pahom get tired and exhausted, Pahom way back at Bashkirs.
He’s tired and panic because the started to set at that time. He has a lot of regret that he has so
much time marking the land. Pahom runs quickly as much as he can to go back.

10. The Bashkirs call Pahom on the steppe as soon as possible. The chief standby and wait for
Pahom and as Pahom saw him at the far he recall his dream last night. Though he know that he
will die that day, he still running out of time. As he reaches the steppe; Pahom collapse and let
the moment leave him a memories that he could spare. The Chief go to Pahom and laugh
because Pahom do so much effort for the land. Meanwhile, Bashkirs and Pahom servant know
that Pahom died that day. They burry his body at six-foot-long grave.
