PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

A. PENGGUNAAN
Past Continuous Tense merupakan pola kalimat yang digunakan untuk menyatakan
kejadian yang SEDANG BERLANGSUNG di waktu LAMPAU.

B. BENTUK
Kata kerja yang digunakan dalam Past Continuous Tense berbentuk Progressive (Ving)
yaitu dengan menambahkan –ing dibelakang infinitive (V1). Contoh:
V1 Ving
do (mengerjakan) doing (sedang mengerjakan)
go (pergi) going (sedang pergi)

SUBJECT TO BE Ving
I, He, She, (It) was having a meeting
You, We, They were when the fire alarm rang

( ̶ ) KALIMAT PENGINGKARAN
SUBJECT TO BE NOT Ving
I, He, She, (It) was not having a meeting
You, We, They were when the fire alarm rang

( ? ) KALIMAT PERTANYAAN
TO BE SUBJECT Ving
Was I, he, she, (it) having a meeting
Were you, we, they when the fire alarm rang?

Catatan:
Di dalam Past Continuous Tense seringkali digunakan kata penghubung WHEN dan
WHILE, yang bermakna KETIKA, untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian yang terjadi ketika
kejadian lain sedang berlangsung di waktu lampau.

 Simple Past Tense + WHILE/ WHEN + Past Continuous Tense

The electricity suddenly went off while/ when I was typing the report.
(Listrik tiba-tiba mati KETIKA saya sedang mengetik laporan itu).

 Past Continuous Tense + WHEN + Simple Past Tense

I was typing the report when the electricity suddenly went off.
(Saya sedang mengetik laporan itu ketika listrik tiba-tiba mati).

C. CONTOH
Berikut ini contoh penggunaan Simple Present Tense.
( + ) They were waiting for us. (Mereka sedang menunggu kita)
( ̶ ) They were not waiting for us. (Mereka tidak sedang menunggu kita)
( ? ) Were they waiting for us? (Apakah mereka sedang menunggu kita?)
