Complementary and Supplementary Angles

 Two angles are complementary if the sum of their measures equal to 900.
Examples:
A
1. 15º + 75º = 90º
∠ AOB and ∠ BOC are B

complementary angles. 750

C 150 O
2. Given m ∠ I = 70º, find its complement.
Since the sum of the measures of complementary angles is equal to 90, subtract the given angle
from 90 to get the complement.

Solution: 90 – m ∠ I = complement
90 – 70 = 20

 Two angles are supplementary if the sum of their measures equal to 1800

Examples:
1. 140º + 40º = 180º
∠ SER and ∠ TER are

supplementary angles

2. ∠ X and ∠ Y are supplementary. Find m ∠ Y if m ∠ X = 100

Solution: m ∠ X + m ∠ Y = 180

100 + m ∠ Y = 180

m ∠ Y = 180 - 100

m ∠ Y = 80
