TLP 12: Tangent and Secant Lines of a Circles: Angles Formed By Secants and Tangents and Their
Measures
Objectives: Through the discussion and examples, the students will be able to:
1. Illustrate secant line and tangent line of a circle;
2. Recall the idea of tangent line and secant line of a circle;
3. State and apply theorem relating to the measure of angles formed by:
i. Two secants
ii. Two tangents
iii. a tangent and a secant.
A. ACTIVATION
Motivation
In your previous lessons in Math, you have learned about Circles and its part. To check if you can still
remember, draw a secant and a tangent on ⨀ M.

Now, with your own words, define secant and tangent line.
Secant line: ________________________________________________________________________________
Tangent line: ______________________________________________________________________________

Generalization
A secant line of a circle is a line that intersects the circle at two points.
´ is a secant line of ⨀ A.
PQ
´ .
PQis a chord contained on secant line PQ
We will now discuss some theorems on tangency.

B. BUILDING-UP
Exemplification

Try This #1!

Draw the figure and identify the parts.
1. Two lines tangent to a circle at the end of a diameter.
2. The two tangents to a circle from an outside point.
3. A line perpendicular at the outer end of the radius.

Example 1

In the accompanying figure, PS and PR are tangent segments from point P to ⨀ O.

Angels Formed By Secants and Tangents and Their Measures

Two secants, two tangents, or a tangent and a secant intercept arcs in several ways.
A. Angles Formed by Two Secants
There are three cases of angles formed by two secants.
1. Angles formed by two secants intersecting insides the circle.

2. Angles formed by two secants intersecting in the circle.

3. Angles formed by two secants intersecting outside the circle.

Now, you will find out the relation of measures of angles formed and the arcs they intercept on the circle.

Theorem: Angles by two secants intersecting inside the circle

The measure of an angle formed by two secants which intersect in the interior of the circle is
equal to one-half the sum of the measures of the arcs intercepted by the angle and its vertical
angle.
Example 2

Use the theorem. In which you

will add the two intercepted arcs
and divide it by 2.

For letter B, using the theorem,

substitute the given values and
integrate. Since we have the value of
∠ 1 which is 30 and BC which 50 we
substitute it and simplify by transposing
AD to the other side.

Practice!
Try This #3!
Using the figure above,
a. find ∠1 if AD = 45° and BC = 34° .
b. find AD if ∠1 = 68° and BC = 20°
[Students are tasked to answer it individually.]
Solutions could be explanation.

Theorem:
The measure of an angle formed by two secants intersecting in the exterior of the circle is equal to
one-half the difference of the intercepted arc.
Find ∠ 1

Example 3

Using the theorem,

substitute the given values
and simplify.

How do you illustrate two secants intersecting in the circle? Find out the measure of an angle formed.

Practice!
Try This #4!
Using the figure above,
a. find ∠ 1 if CD = 130° and AB = 35° .
b. find CD if ∠ 1 = 28° and AB = 47°
[Students are tasked to answer it individually.]
Solutions could be explanation.

B. Measures of Angles
Formed by Secant and
Tangent
o In figure 1, how many arcs are intercepted by the angle? ______________________________________
o Can you consider this an inscribed angle? __________________________________________________
o Can you formulate a theorem relating the measures of the angle formed and its intercepted arc?
____________________________________________________________________________________
o In figure 2 and 3, how many arcs are intercepted by the angle formed? ___________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________
Figure 1 formed an inscribed angle.

Theorem:
If a secant and a tangent or two tangents intersect in the exterior of the circle, then the measure of the
angle formed is one-half the difference of the intercepted arcs.

Example 3
Practice!
Try This #5!
Using the figure above,
a. find ∠A if CD = 175° and BD = 45° .
b. find BD if ∠A = 36° and CD = 150° .
[Students are tasked to answer it individually.]
Solutions could be explanation.

Example 4

Use the theorem. This example is

quite different with the first one. As
you can see there is no value for
XZY so, by the definition,
explanation (circumference of a circle is 360° )
360 – XY that is 215. Now, since we
have the value of XZY, we can now
use the theorem. So, 215 – 145 is 70
and divide to 2. We have 35.

Example 5

Observe the given. We only have 45

° for ∠A. Using the theorem, we
substitute the value and let x =
BDC. Since there is no value for BC,
we use the definition (circumference
of a circle is 360° ), 360 – BDC.
Then, substitute. Then simplify.
45° = x - 180°
45° + 180 ° = x
225 = x
BDC = 225°

Note: In getting the measurement, check first what segments are there in a circle (if it has two tangents or
secant segments, or one tangent and one secant, or etc.) so that you can use the appropriate theorem.

Practice!
Try This #6!
Using the figure on Example no. 5,
