TLP 13: Segment lengths of Circle

 Theorems on Relationship of Chord and tangent segments to Arcs of the Circle
Objectives: Through the discussion and examples, the students will be able to:
1. Illustrate theorems of segments of circle.
2. Apply the theorems in getting the measurement of the chords and segment.
A. ACTIVATION
Awareness
In the previous TLP, we have tackled about chords (segment) of a circle. Now, we will discuss about the
Power Theorem in which very useful in getting the measurement of chords and segment of a circle.
Activity
Before that differentiate chords and segment. Using the Venn Diagram below.

CHORD SEGMENT

B. DEVELOPMENT
Analysis
In a circle, chords are being segment joining by any two points of the circle
while the segments in a circle are the secant and tangent segments.
Now, let’s have the theorem
The following theorems which deal with the products of lengths of
segments related to circles are called Power theorem.
Theorems on Relationship of Chord and tangent segments to Arcs of the Circle.

Intersecting Chords Theorem

If two chords intersect in a circle, then the product of the measure of the segment of one chord is equal
to the product of the measure of the segment of the other chords.
Example 1

Practice!
Try This #1!
Using the figure on example 6,
a. find GO if EO = 7, DO = 5 and FO = 6
[Use another sheet of paper for your answers and solutions. Just put Try This # __ !]
Solutions could be explanation.

Secant Power Theorem

If two secant segments are drawn to a circle from the exterior point, the power of the length of one
segment and the external point is equal to the product of the length of the other secant segments and
the external point.
Example 2

Tangent- Secant Theorem

If a tangent segment and a secant segment are drawn to a circle from an external point, then the square
of the measure of the tangent segment is equal to the product of the secant segment and its external
segment.

Example 3
Practice!
Try This #2!
Using the figure on example 6,
a. find ZO if XY = 5 and YO = 7
[Use another sheet of paper for your answers and solutions. Just put Try This # __ !]
Solutions could be explanation.

IV. EVALUATION
Show your solutions.
Solve for x. Assume that lines which appear tangent are tangent. Tell what theorem that being used.
Note: If necessary, substitute the value to x to find the missing measurement.
Hint: [(x-3) +](4) = [(x-6)+5](5)
Find x.

Hint: (4x+2)(8) = (4x)(9)

Find x.

Hint: (6x+8x)(8x) = (9+7)(7)

Find x.
