PRAYER

God our Father, be with us today and help us to be good examples of your
love.
May we do our best to follow you in showing concern for others.
Help our school and our local communities to be places of faith so that we
can help others to believe in you.
May Mary, who praised God in all things, be an inspiration to us in all we
say and do.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

TOPICS:
SECANTS, TANGENTS,
SEGMENTS and SECTORS OF
A CIRCLE
SECANT
A secant is a line or segment or a ray that intersects a circle
at exactly two points. A secant contains chord of a circle.
TANGENT LINE
A tangent to a circle is a line coplanar with the circle and
intersects it one and only one point.
The point of intersection of the line and the circle is called
the point of tangency.
Activity 1:
Tangent or Secant
1. In each figure,
identify if the figure a. tangent line d. tangent line

illustrates a tangent
line, secant, or b. secant line e. neither
neither.
c. secant line
COMMON TANGENT
a common tangent is a line or segment or ray that is tangent
to two circles in the same plane.

a) Common internal tangents

b) Common external tangents
a) Common internal tangents
intersect the segment joining the centers of the two circles.
b) Common external tangents
are lines or rays or segments that do not intersect the
segment joining the centers of the two circles.
EXTERNAL SECANT
SEGMENT
is the part of a secant segment that is outside of a circle.
ACTIVITY 2
In each figure,
identify if common a. neither
c. Common internal
internal tangents, tangents

common external b. Common

tangents or neither are external
tangents
being illustrated.
d. neither
SECTOR AND SEGMENT OF
A CIRCLE
A sector of a circle is the region bouded by an arc of the
circle and two radii to the end points of the arc.
To find the area of a sector of a circle, get the product of the
ratio (measure of the arc/360) and the area of the circle.
EXAMPLE
The radius of circle K is 8 cm. If measure of arc JL=40, what
is the area of the sector JKL?
Solution: b. Find the area (A) of the c. Get the product of the ratio
To find the area of a sector circle using the formula and the area of the circle
JKL; A = πr², where r is the length Area of sector
of the radius. JKL= (1/9)(64πcm²)
a. Determine first the ratio = 64πcm²/9
(measure of the arc/360) By substitution: or approximately equal to
= 40/360 A= π(8cm)² 22.33cm²
= 1/9 = 64πcm²
SEGMENT OF A CIRCLE
is the region bounded by an arc and segment joining its
endpoints.
EXAMPLE
The shaded region in the figure above is a segment of a circle O. It is the
region bounded by arc MN and segment MN. To find the area of the
shaded segment in the figure, subtract the area of the triangle MON from
the area of sector MON.
If arc MN=90° and the Solution: In the same figure, the area of
radius of the circle is 5 cm, Area of sector triangle
then the area of sector MON = 1/2(5cm)(5cm) or
MON is one-fourth of the MON=(1/4)(5cm)²π
∇MON = 25/2cm²
area of the whole circle =(1/4)(25cm²)π
= 25/4πcm²
The area of the shaded segment
= 25/4πcm²-25/2cm² which is approximately 7.14cm²

Take note, the constant value of π = 3.14

ACTIVITY 3
Find the area of the
shaded region of each
circle.
Use π = 3.14
1. 28.26 cm² 2. 56.52 cm² 3. 2.57 cm²
