CHORDS, ARCS, CENTRAL ANGLES, AND INSCRIBED

ANGLES

Learning Competency
The learner derives inductively the relationships among the chords, arcs,
central angles, and inscribed angles. (M10GE – llc-1)

Objective
The learner derives the relations among the chords, arcs, central angles and
inscribed angles.

Let’s Recall
Using the figure at the right, identify and name the following terms related to Circle O.
1. a radius
2. a diameter
3. a semicircle
4. a minor arc
5. a major arc
6. 2 central angles

Using the same figure above, identify the following:

7.point O
8. ∠𝐴𝐶𝐷
9. ACB
10.points A, B, C, D

Let’s Understand
REMEMBER: Central Angles and Arcs
● A central angle of a circle is an angle whose vertex is the center of the circle.
In the figure at the right:
ₒ ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 is a central angle of circle C
ₒ the sides of ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 divides the circle into 2 arcs:
minor arc and major arc
ₒ AB is a minor arc and ADB is a major arc
ₒ AB is the intercepted arc of ∠𝐴𝐶𝐵

1
MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK3

●The degree measure of the minor arc is the measure of the central angle which
intercepts
In the figure 𝑚∠𝐴𝐶𝐵 = 85, then 𝑚𝐴𝐵 = 85

REMEMBER:
1. The degree measure of a major arc is equal to 360° minus the degree
measure of a central angle.

𝑚𝐴𝐷𝐵 = 360° − 85° = 275°

2. The degree measure of a semicircle is equal to 180°.

m DAM=180° and m DIM=180°

3. Arc Addition Postulate: Given point B on arc AC, then

B
A

C m AC=m AB + m BC

Inscribed Angles
● An inscribed angle in a circle is an angle whose vertex is on the circle and
whose sides contain the chords of a circle.

Inscribed Angle Not an Inscribed Angle Not an Inscribed Angle

2
MATHEMATICS10-QUARTER2-WEEK3

REMEMBER: The measure of an inscribed angle is one-half the

measure of its intercepted arc.
A
Given: ∠𝐴𝑅𝑂 is an inscribed angle of
̅̅̅̅ contains D
Circle D and 𝐴𝑅
D O
1
Prove: m∠ ARO = 2 m AO If m AO = 90,
then m∠ARO = 45
R
Proof: Draw radius DO and let x = m∠ARO. Since ∠ADO is a central angle,
m AO = m ∠ADO. DR and DO are radii, ∆𝐷𝑂𝑅 is isosceles and
𝑚∠𝐷𝑂𝑅 = 𝑥. By Exterior Angle Theorem, m∠ADO =2x, therefore
1
m AO = 2x and m ∠ARO = 2 m AO.

REMEMBER:
1. If two inscribed angle intercept the same arc, then the angles are
congruent. A

C
D

In the figure ∠ADB and ∠ACB are inscribed angles. Both angles
intercept the same arc, arc AB. Therefore ∠ADB ≅ ∠ACB
2. An angle inscribed in a semicircle is a right angle.
B

A C

In the figure, ∠ABC is a right angle inscribed by a semicircle AC.

3. If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its opposite angles are
supplementary.
D
A

B
In the figure, ∠A and ∠C are opposite angles
∠B and ∠D are opposite angles.
So, m∠A + m∠C = 180 and m∠B + m∠D = 180
