(AY 2020-21)

Tutorial Sheet-4

1. Solve the following differential equations:

(a) x2 y 00 + 2xy 0 − 1 = 0
(b) yy 00 + (y 0 )2 = 0

2. Find the general solution of the given initial value problem.

(a) y 00 + 4y 0 + 3y = 0; y(0) = 2, y 0 (0) = −1

(b) 4y 00 − y = 0; y(−2) = 2, y 0 (−2) = −1

3. Find the differential equation whose general solution is y = Ae2x + Be−3x .

4. Show that x and xex are linearly independent on the x - axis.

5. If the Wronskian W of f and g is x2 ex and if f (x) = x , find g(x).

6. If the Wronskian of f and g is x cos(x) sin(x) and if u = f + 3g, v = f − 2g, find

the Wronskian of u and v.

7. If f , g and h are differentiable functions, show that W (f g, f h) = f 2 W (g, h).

8. Find the fundamental set of solutions for the given differential equation and initial
point.

(a) y 00 + y 0 − 2y = 0; x0 = 0
(b) y 00 + 5y 0 + 4y = 0; x0 = 1

9. Show that y1 (x) = sin(x) and y2 (x) = sin(x) cos(x) are linearly independent so-
lutions of y 00 + y = 0. Determine the constants c1 and c2 so that the solutions
sin(x) + 3 cos(x) = c1 y1 (x) + c2 y2 (x).

10. Solve the initial value problem y 00 + 2y = 0; (0) = 1, y 0 (0) = 3. Then find the
amplitude and period of the solution.
