SESSION SUMMARY

Steel at this stage is one of the most widely used material for several types of building
construction specially those which requires larger clearances such as factories, warehouses, and
even common buildings for its strength and durability. Structural elements that may be made
out of steel are beams, columns, trusses, braces, etc. and may be designed with three different
design approaches/theories which are plastic design, elastic design, and limit state design.
For the next module, properties of steel as a material will be discussed.

ACTIVITY 1
“Introduction to Steel Structures”

Name: ________________ SCORE: ______________

Major: ________________ Date: ________________

1. List at least 10 more types of structures that maybe required to be constructed with
steel instead of other materials.

2. Based on your answers from #1, make brief but direct explanation on how the use of
steel be advantageous instead of using other materials.

3. Define at least 8 structural members mentioned in this module.
