There are

of kangaroos
in Australia.
The Red Kangaroo
is the most famous,

They are two centimetres

There are fifty different kinds of kangaroos in Australia.

Kangaroos are 180 centimetres tall
and they weigh 45 kilograms.
They live for 15 years.
It is very hot in Australia, so kangaroos eat at night.
W hen they are hot, they lick their arms to keep cool.

A joey lives for five months in its mother’s pouch.
Kangaroos are marsupials.

Koalas are also marsupials.
A baby koala lives in its mother’s pouch.
They drink their mother’s milk.
A koala is not a real bear.
‘Koala’ is an Aborigine word. It means ‘no drink’.
Koalas get water from eucalyptus leaves.
These animals only eat leaves from eucalyptus trees.
They live in the east of Australia.
Koalas spend 16 hours a day sleeping.
Baby koalas are blind.
They are two centimetres long and they have no hair.

There are two kinds of crocodiles in Australia:
the freshwater crocodile
and the saltwater crocodile.
The saltwater crocodile is
the world’s biggest reptile.
It is six metres long.
Crocodiles lay about fifty eggs
in a nest. The mother carries
the babies to the water in her mouth.
Only fifty per cent of the babies survive.
Saltwater crocodiles live
for a hundred years.
Crocodiles eat fish, turtles,
birds, cattle and people!

Dinosaurs walked on the earth for 150 million years.

Then they all died.

Some dinosaurs had

long necks.They

walked very slowly.

The diplodocus liked to eat leaves.

Velociraptors had sharp claws

and ran very quickly.

Tyrannosaurus rex

liked to eat meat.


Dinosaurs laid eggs.

And dinosaurs had very small brains.

During the time of the dinosaurs, flying reptiles lived in

the sky.They had very big wings ...

... and they liked

to eat fish.

Other reptiles lived in

the water during the time of the dinosaurs.


Maybe some of these animals are still alive today.

Moles live underground.They dig long tunnels.
Moles make mole hills with the earth.

Moles live for about years. There are lots of moles in
England, W ales and
Scotland - but there are
no moles in Ireland.

Moles live underground.

They dig long tunnels and make

mole hills with the earth.

Some tunnels are 19 or 20 metres long.

Moles sleep on dry grass underground.

Gardeners hate moles.

But moles help gardeners.

Snails and slugs eat flowers and vegetables.

Moles eat slugs and snails.

Moles eat worms too.

They bite their heads off and keep

the worms for later. Moles are always

hungry.

If a mole weighs 200 grams, it eats

200 grams of food every day.


Moles have small eyes, a pointed pink nose, strong

claws, small back feet, a sensitive tail and black fur.

Moles are between 2 and 23

centimetres long.

Moles are almost blind, but they can hear everything,

smell everything and touch everything.

Moles have about five or six babies

The babies leave the nest after five

weeks and build their own tunnels.

Moles live for about 3 years.

There are lots of moles in England,

W ales and Scotland - but there

are no moles in Ireland.
