1. Scope
This SAE standard provides general and dimensional specifications for formed tube ends and hose
fittings. These connections are intended for general applications in low pressure automotive and
hydraulic systems on automotive, industrial, and commercial products. The fittings shown in Figures 2
and 3 are intended to be retained by hose clamps as specified in SAE J1508.
It is recommended that where step sizes or additional types of fittings are required, they be designed to
conform with the specifications of this document insofar as they may apply. The following general
specifications shall supplement the dimensional data contained in the tables with respect to all
unspecified detail.
2. References
The following publications form a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. The latest issue
of SAE publications shall apply.

The following publications are provided for information purposes only and are not a required part of this
document.
3. Size Designations
The hose fitting size is generally designated by the fractional inch nominal hose inside diameter together
with the nominal pipe or straight thread size. However, these sizes may also be designated by their dash
sizes as follows:
3.1 The hose dash size is equivalent to the number of sixteenth inch increments in the hose inside
diameter.
3.2 The pipe thread dash size is the number of sixteenth inch increments in the nominal pipe thread
size.
3.3 The Oring boss thread dash sizes correspond to the number of sixteenth inch increments in the
outside diameter of the tubing with which they are designed to be used.
Tabulated dimensions shall apply to the finished parts, plated or otherwise processed, as specified by the
purchaser. Details of internal construction of fittings are not specified and shall be optional with the
manufacturer.
Where applicable, the maximum and minimum flat dimensions shall be within the commercial tolerance of
bar stock from which the fittings are produced. Formed or upset contours shall fit standard wrench
openings. The minimum across corners dimensions of external hexagons shall be 1.092 times the
nominal width across flats, but shall not result in a side flat width of less than 0.43 times the nominal width
across flats.
Except for nominal sizes and thread specifications, dimensions and tolerances are given in SI units.
Tolerance on all dimensions not otherwise limited shall be ±0.25 mm. Angular tolerance on axis of ends
on elbows shall be ±2.50 degrees for sizes up to and including 9.52 mm and ±1.50 degrees for sizes
larger than 9.52 mm.
-2-
SAE J1231 Revised AUG2004
Unless otherwise specified, tolerances on hole diameters designated as a drill in the dimensional tables
(Tables 3, 4, and 5) shall conform to Table 1:
5. Passages
Where passages in straight fittings are machined from opposite ends, the offset at the meeting point shall
not exceed 0.40 mm. The crosssectional area at the junction of fluid passages shall not be less than that
of the smallest passage. This assembly passage definition does not apply to bent tubes.
6. Contour
Details of contour shall be optional with manufacturer provided the tabulated dimensions are maintained
and serviceability of the fittings is not impaired. Wrench flats on elbows shall be optional.
7. Straight Threads
Unified Standard Class 2A external and Class 2B internal threads shall apply to plain finish (unplated)
fittings having straight threads designated A1 in Figure 3 and Table 5. For externally threaded parts with
additive finish, the maximum diameters of Class 2A may be exceeded by the amount of the allowance,
that is, the basic diameters (Class 2A maximum diameters plus the allowance) shall apply to an externally
threaded part after plating. For internally threaded parts with additive finish, the Class 2B diameters
apply after plating.
The pitch diameter tolerance shall be the same as the corresponding diameterpitch combination and
class of the Unified fine and 12thread series. See SAE J475.
Where external threads are produced by roll threading and the body is not undercut, the unthreaded
portion adjacent to the shoulder may be reduced to the minimum pitch diameter.
External threads shall be chamfered and internal threads shall be countersunk as specified in the
illustrations and dimensional tables.
The various thread elements of Class 2A external and Class 2B internal threads on hose fittings shall be
concentric within the limitations specified under General Specifications in SAE J512.
-3-
SAE J1231 Revised AUG2004
9. Pipe Threads
Taper pipe threads designated A in Figure 2 and Table 4 shall conform to the Dryseal American Standard
Taper Pipe Thread (NPTF). Specifications are given in detail in SAE J476. At purchaser's option, the
pipe thread may be shortened in conformity with the SAE Short Dryseal Taper Pipe Thread (PTF-SAE
Short).
The length of a fullform external thread shall not be shorter than L plus one pitch (thread) for Dryseal
NPTF and L for Dryseal PTFSAE Short; except where the thread is cut through into a relieved body or
undercut on the fitting, then the minimum full thread length may be reduced by one pitch (thread).
External pipe threads shall be chamfered from the diameters shown in Table 2 to produce the specified
length of chamfered or partial thread.
Formed tube hose fittings shall be made from brass, steel, or other materials listed in SAE J846, and
specified by the purchaser.
Brass shall be SAE UNS C36000 (half hard), SAE UNS C34500, or SAE UNS C35000 for bar or extruded
stock and SAE UNS C37700 for forgings. Steel tubing shall be SAE standard single wall intended for
general applications in low pressure automotive and hydraulic systems. When steel tubing is used for a
formed tube connection, the wall thickness shall be the manufacturer's option unless specified by the
purchaser. Dimension D Nominal I.D. in Table 3 does not apply to steel tubing. However, the D
dimension shall be the same as the nominal tubing I.D.
-4-
SAE J1231 Revised AUG2004
At the manufacturer’s option, parts may be machined or milled from bar, forged, or of multiple component
design.
Fittings made from multiple components shall be capable of withstanding 100 psi (minimum) without
leakage or failure.

11. Finish
The external surfaces and threads of all carbon steel parts shall be plated or coated with a suitable
material that passes a 72 h salt spray test in accordance with ASTM B 117. Any appearance of red rust
during the 72 h salt spray test shall be considered failure, except for the following:
NOTE—Cadmium plating is not preferred due to environmental reasons. Parts manufactured to this
document after January 1, 1997, shall not be Cadmium plated. Internal fluid passages shall be
protected from corrosion during storage. Changes in plating may affect assembly torques and
require requalification, when applicable.
12. Workmanship
Workmanship shall conform to the best commercial practice to produce high quality fittings. Fittings shall
be free from all hanging burrs, loose scale, and all other defects that might affect serviceability. All
sealing surfaces must be smooth except that annular tool marks up to 2.5 µm maximum, unless
otherwise specified, shall be permissible.
Use of a compatible lubricant or sealant in assembling Dryseal pipe threads may be desirable to minimize
galling and effect a tight seal.
Formed tube connections may be shaped to either of four styles. Type 2 shall be supplied unless agreed
to by the purchaser and the manufacturer.
Two types of hose fittings are defined. Male Dryseal Pipe Thread (Figure 2, Table 4) and Male Straight
Thread ORing Boss (Figure 3, Table 5). Type 2 connections shall be supplied unless agreed to by the
purchaser and the manufacturer.

Rationale
The revisions represented in J1231 are the result of direct requests from the User community. The
revision will reduce the amount of force required to assemble the -16 size connections, resulting in more
efficient assembly.
Not applicable.
Application
