Instruction. This is your second lock down Social Science notes, exercise and activities. Please read the
notes carefully and answer the questions and exercises that follows. There are two parts to this
homework and this is the first one.

Strand: Culture

Sub. Strand: Cultural Expression

Outcome: 7.3.1→ Students are able to identify and describe key elements of national cultures.

Topic. What is culture?

Culture is the total way that people live. It is created by groups of human beings. Everywhere you look
you can see parts of culture. There are many different cultures. Cultures overlap, cultures borrow from
each other, cultures adapt and innovate, and cultures are always changing.

Pacific culture is a term that covers many different ideas and ways. It can include other cultures like
Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian cultures.

All nations, all over the world, have certain things that define their culture. They include such things as:

 Language * Myths and stories


 Music and dance * Laws
 Food and cooking * Taboos
 Customs and traditions * Clothing and personal decoration
 Arts and crafts { such as paintings, pottery, weapons, tools}

Examining Culture

You can look at culture in many different way. You can compare different themes in pacific culture.
There are hundreds of ways to look at culture in the pacific. Culture is changing in Papua New Guinea
and across the pacific islands. Some of these changes are good and some are bad.

When we move to other places, we learn about other cultures and perhaps borrow some of the features
of those cultures.

* No one knows exactly how many different cultures there in Papua New Guinea. Usually people say
‘more than 800’ because there are more than 800 different languages. So this is probably how many
cultures there are.

* Think of a culture that is very different from yours [such as America or Australian]. How is this culture

Chart Activity [10 marks]

* This activity requires you to find a chart and do it neatly and hand it in with the rest of the home work
for marking. The activity on the chart is out of ten [10] marks.

** Choose a part of a culture you find it interesting [such as music, art, law or language] and make a
chart comparing your culture with another.
