Guided Lab Exercise: Hello Workbot (Part 1)

1) Introduction
In this exercise, you will create a recipe which will recognise a specific message entered by the
user in Slack and post a reply back to the user.

Your Hello Workbot recipe (High level flow)

- When a new command is sent to Slack Workbot:
- Post a command reply

What you’ll learn

- Trigger the recipe with a new command with 3 Keywords using Workbot for Slack
- Post command reply using Workbot for Slack
- Utilise command input (parameters)
- Map app data pills

2) Setting up
1. Sign up for Workato account if you do not have one.
2. Sign up for Slack account.
3. Set up Slack connection in Workato. The instructions can be found here.

3) Building your recipe

Create a new recipe

4. Go to your Workato account and click on the create a new recipe button at the upper
right hand corner of the page.
5. Select Trigger from an App and start building.

6. Select Workbot for Slack as the app.

 7. Select New command as the trigger.
8. Connect Workato to your Slack account.
9. For Application, Command action and Action data, change to Enter custom value. Enter
“Hello”, “Workato”, “Workbot” in each of the fields respectively. It should be like this:

10. As Command hint is a required field, key in Bot 1.

11. Click Save and close the view on the right.

Add an action to post command reply in Slack

12. Add an action and select Workbot for Slack as the app and Post command reply as the
action.
13. In the Message text field, key in “Hello, how are you?”. It should look like this:

 If you cannot find this Message text field, go to show optional fields. Search for
Message text, select it and click ok.

14. Save your recipe and click on the exit button on the top right corner.
15. Click on Start recipe.

Test Workbot on Slack

16. Go to your Slack account.

17. Go to workbot under Apps.
18. Key in the command Hello Workato Workbot and hit enter.
19. Workbot should reply you with a message “Hello, how are you?” as such:

Results

20. Go back to your Workato account.

21. Refresh the page.
22. You should see one completed job.

4) Congratulations

You have successfully created your first workbot recipe using Workato. Please complete part 2
before submitting your recipe.

Guided Lab Exercise: Hello Workbot (Part 2)

1) Introduction
In this exercise, you will learn how to customise your Workbot reply message.

2) Building your recipe

Reuse your recipe from part 1

1. You’ll reuse the recipe you have created in part 1.
Edit your trigger
2. Under Trigger, in the Command input fields, add a command input called Name.

Edit your post command reply action
3. Under your post command reply action, in the Message text field, map the Name data
pill from step 1 output. Example:

Test Workbot on Slack

5. Go to your Slack account.
6. Go to workbot under Apps.
7. Key in the command Hello Workato Workbot and hit enter.
8. The workbot will ask for your input. Type in your name and hit enter.
9. Workbot should reply you with a message as such:

4) Submitting your recipe
Once you have completed your recipe, please follow the steps below for submission:

A. Please insert the name of your company at the start of your recipe name: [Your
Company’s Name] Recipe Name.

i. Example: [Workato] Hello Workbot

B. Next, go into Automation Institute (https://workato.com/institute) → Basic Phase and

click on the Guided Lab Exercise:

C. Click on “Start Quiz” and you will be prompted to submit your recipe link:

D. To obtain your recipe link:

i. In your recipe page, click on Settings. Next, click on Sharing on the left hand side.

 ii. You will now see your recipe link which contains the sharing token for private
sharing. It will look something like this:
https://www.workato.com/recipes/1282352?st=098450. Only people with this
link can view your recipe. Click on Copy.

iii. Thereafter, paste it to the input field in Automation Institute:

 iv. Click on Next Question and input the number of hours spent completing this
exercise. This information is solely to provide us with feedback.

v. Click on Next Question you can input any difficulties or feedback on the exercise:

i. If you have no comments, simply leave a “nil” reply.

vi. Thereafter, click on Submit Quiz and you are done! The Workato team will review
your submission and go through this during the upcoming lab hour.
