NAME:

Stained Glass Window

You have been contracted out to design a stained glass window to put up in the ST FX
atrium.
**The dimensions of the window being replaced is 1m by 1.5m
Instructions
1. Sketch a design for your stained glass window. Use various sizes of circles and other
shapes to make your design. Number each piece in your design. (You may use graph
paper)
2. Each piece of stained glass needs a border (usually these are made of metals such as
copper or lead). Determine the perimeter/ circumference of each circle.
3. Calculate the circumference (or perimeter) and area for each shape in your design.
Record your measurements in the chart below.
4. Use coloured tissue paper and construction paper to make a model of your design.
5. Using the rubric complete the self assessment at the bottom when you are finished.
6. You only need to show all your calculations for 4 different shapes (if you have more
shapes than this that is great). You MUST determine the cost of all shapes!
7. Determine the total cost to actually build your stained glass window you are replacing.
a) Make a scale (to determine area and perimeter of actual window based off
measurements of your design (Hint : determine what 1cm on your design is
equivalent to for the actual window. Ex: 1cm: ?)
b) To calculate total cost:
metal (border/perimeter) - $0.40 per cm for metal,
glass (area) - $0.10 per cm

**Hand in a rough copy of your sketch which labels the shape #.

****You must have a minimum of 4 shapes.
******You must calculate the cost to build the real stained glass window.

Rubric/ Self Assessment

Knowledge and Understanding:         4       3       2       1       R

Demonstrates thorough understanding of concepts. Calculations and measurements (to the
nearest tenth of a cm) are done properly and thoroughly (units correct). Some use of complex
shapes (re: semi-circles, ovals etc…). Scale is accurate. Cost is calculated properly and
makes sense.

Application:     4       3       2       1       R

Model is complete, neat, and creative.Thought went into the design of stained glass window.
Excellent use of shapes to create an image (Can apply knowledge of shapes to create an
image, shapes are creatively incorporated into your design, use of complex shapes re: semi
circles). Class time used effectively (Student was on task). Sketch is complete. Scale is
accurate and you show how you came up with your scale.
. **IF YOU NEED MORE
SPACE DO ON A SEPARATE
