2.0 Course Description:


This course seeks to introduce student to the basic issues in project management. It is a basic course
that seek to help students appreciate the role of projects in organisational growth and development. It
aims at introducing students to the planning, organizing and managing of resources to bring
about the successful completion of specific project goals and objectives. It focuses on
developing a project plan, which includes defining and confirming the project goals and
objectives, identifying tasks and how goals will be achieved, quantifying the resources
needed, and determining budgets and timelines for completion.

3.0 Course Objectives:


By the end of the course, students should be able to:
 discuss project management
 relate project management to an organization’s overall strategy
 analyze the role of leadership in project success
 discuss the relevant issues in project scope management
 demonstrate the ability to apply theory, tools and techniques in the effective use of
organisational resources.

6.0 Instructional Approach:


a. Short lectures: The lecturers provide information and explain concepts
where necessary only briefly.
b. Student responsibility for learning. Students are expected to be responsible
for their own learning as much as possible. They are expected to read the
relevant chapters and supplementary materials for the scheduled classes.
They should listen more and participate in class discussions than rely on
note-taking and memorization of facts.
c. Handouts. Where necessary, the lecturers will provide a handout to
students to make photocopies themselves.
d. Guest Speakers. As much as possible, guest speakers will be invited to share
their experiences with the class. Students are encouraged to assist with
identification of suitable guest speakers and in making the necessary
logistical arrangements.
e. Group work/Team Learning. Team work is emphasized. Very early in the
course, students are expected to form teams. All assignments will be done in
teams and learning to work in teams or groups is part of the learning
outcomes of the course.

9.0 Course Policies:


Attendance Attendance at lectures directly affect your grade. You should therefore be
punctual for lectures. Attendance is required for presentations.
Class participation Class participation is a major part of the performance indicators. Points will be
awarded to students who evidence quality participation. Consequently, students
are expected to come to lectures having thoroughly read the recommended text
and solve the assigned questions.
Assignments All assignments must be handed in at the stated time and in the stated form or
they will automatically receive a grade of zero. Late assignments are not
acceptable. It is your responsibility to retain a copy of all assignments should any
questions arise later concerning that assignment.
Late submission of Late assignments will not be tolerated. If a student has any genuine problem,
assignments he/she must contact the lecturer before the deadline for the submission of the
assignment. There are no guarantees for extension of time; each case will be
treated on its own merit.
Academic dishonesty Cheating and plagiarism will be severely penalized. Plagiarism involves copying
someone’s work and presenting it as if they were your original work. Students
are advised to learn from each other but not to copy colleague’s assignments and
present them.
