Art Scholarship Application Task 2020

10+ and 11+ entry

For this task you will need:
2B pencil
A black biro
A pack of colour pencils
A box of watercolours
A paint brush
A sheet of A4 cartridge paper
A sheet of A5 thick cartridge or watercolour paper
An A2 sheet of cartridge to mount your work on
A timer
A camera, and the ability to print out photos
Set up a still life consisting of a jug, a glass, a small
plate and two different pieces of fruit. Sit the
objects on some patterned fabric and arrange them
in an interesting way. Think about how you might sit
things behind, in front and beside each other.

You now need to carry out some timed

drawings. Make sure you have gathered
all the materials you need together.
Fold or divide your sheet of A4 cartridge paper into four rectangles. Write
your full name in the bottom right rectangle. You can choose to work either
landscape or portrait. Make sure your drawings fill the rectangles.

Drawing 1: set your timer for 15 minutes

In the top left rectangle, use your 2B pencil to make a tonal drawing of your still life.Try to get
a range of shading and tone in your drawing. Particularly look at how objects cast a shadow on
the surface they are sitting in. Stop when your alarm rings after 15 minutes.

Drawing 2: set your timer for 15 minutes

You will be using biro in the top right rectangle. Using line only, draw your still life from a
different angle to the first drawing. With biro you can weave lines over each other to create
light and dark. Continue with this drawing until your alarm goes.

Drawing 3: set your timer for 15 minutes

Working in the bottom left rectangle you will be using colour pencil. Move to another view of
the still life then sketch out your composition using light blue pencil before starting to build your
colours, using the full range of colours. There should be no white paper left in the rectangle
when you have finished.

Written task
In the bottom right rectangle write down which drawing you like the best and why. Which of
the three drawings would work best as a painting is your next task.
Painting Task
• Get your watercolour paints, paintbrush, water pot and A5 thick paper ready to complete a
small painting. It is also useful to have a paper towel for blotting.
• Sit in the same spot as you did for your favourite drawing in the last three tasks. Then, using
a light blue colour pencil, sketch out your composition to fill your A5 sheet of paper (5
minutes).
• Then start to build your painting by layering your watercolour paints – set your timer for 45
minutes for this task.

Presentation Task
• When you have completed your painting, photograph your still life from the three different
angles you drew and painted from. Print out these three photos.
• Finally, mount your three drawings, watercolour painting and photos onto the A2 sheet of
white paper. Make sure your name is written clearly on the sheet.
• Remember to include this task in your portfolio.
