Expanding Brackets

1. In expanding a pair of single brackets, an expression in brackets is multiplied by a

coefficient.
Therefore, each term within the brackets must be multiplied by that coefficient.

2. Example 1:
Expand 3(a+2 b) 7. Example 5:
Expand ( e +f )(e−f )

3. Example 2:
Expand 2(x−3)

4. Example 3: 8. Example 6:
Expand the following Expand the following
a) −2 m(m−4 ) a) ( x−2 ) ( x−3 )

2
b) ( 3 a+1)
3

b) ( 2 p−3 q )2

5. Example 4:
Expand ( x +3)( y−4)

Key: (a+ b)2=a2 + ( 2 ×a × b ) +b 2

!NOTES!
 3−1(x−2) is written as 3−(x−2)
 Hence, expand 3−(x−2)

!Test Yourself!
Simplify the following
a) ( 3 x− y )−( x−4 y)
b) 4 w2 −( 2 w−v ) (2 w +v )
c) 3 ( 2 m−1 )+(m−1)2

!Challenge Yourself!
Expand the following
a) ( x +1)( x +2)(x+ 4)
b) ( x +6)( x+ 1)( x−2)
c) ( x +4 )( x−4)2

Factorisation

1. Factorising is the reverse process of expanding.

2. There are 4 methods in factorising an algebraic expression:

1) Using the Highest Common Factor (HCF)
2) Using Difference of Squares of Two Terms
3) Using Cross Multiplication (‘Butterfly’ method)
4) Using Common Factors Involving 4 Algebraic Terms
