ENVIRONMENT CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT

PARTICULATE EMISSION CONTROL BY PULSE JET BAG FILTER

1
1.0 INTRODUCTION

The SOLTEQ Pulsed-Jet Bag Filter System (Model: AP 04) has been locally
manufactured to a high standard with emphasis on ease of use and operational safety. It
consists of a baghouse, a pulsed-jet cleaning system, a feed container with a valve, an air
blower, an outlet dust filter and an airflow sensor. The unit has been custom designed by
Malaysian engineers to introduce Chemical Engineering students to dust pollution control
using a fabric filter.

The baghouse is divided into two sections: top and bottom sections. The top section is
made of mild steel and connected to the compressed air tank that is part of the pulsed-jet
cleaning mechanism. The bottom section is made of durable clear polycarbonate with a
dust collector in the form of a removable drawer. Student can view through this bottom
section the filtering and cleaning activities of the bag filter system. The cleaning
mechanism consists of a compressed air tank, a solenoid valve with a remote selectable
timer and a portable air compressor. Four units of polyester fabric filters are installed in a
row inside the bottom section of the baghouse.

An air blower installed at the outlet is capable of drawing 198m3/hr of air through the
system. The air velocity is set by adjusting the blower's speed, which is controlled by an
inverter. A valve is installed below the feed container to control the amount of dust
particles sample introduced into the air stream before being filtered inside the baghouse.

A digital differential pressure indicator has been installed on the control panel to measure
pressure drop (DP) across the baghouse and venturi.

3.0 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES

3.1 GENERAL START-UP PROCEDURES

1. Weigh 200g of Dust Sample.

2. Clean up the chamber from any leftover.
3. Secure all bolts to windows and the drawer for airtight operation.
4. Switch on the air compressor. Regulate outlet to 2 bar.
5. Connect compressed air supply at 2 bar to compressed air buffer tank, TN1.
6. Load the dust sample into the feed vessel with the outlet closed and vibrator off.
7. Now the equipment is ready for experiments.

Note: Make sure that there are four air-bag filters installed in the baghouse before starting
the experiment.

Objective: To study the effect of varying total filtering area on the separation
efficiency.

1. Follow the general start-up procedures.

2. Switch on the main panel. Switch on the blower and set the frequency to 30Hz using
the air blower speed controller. (The frequency is monitored on the FUJI frequency
inverter panel mounted beside the control panel)
3. Switch on the Pulsed-Jet Solenoid Valve, SV1.
4. Set the vibrator speed to 1, and then switch it on.
5. Pour the dust into the feed vessel until 80% full, then put the lid on. Open the teed
vessel outlet, CV1. After the vessel is almost empty, close the outlet, open the lid and
pour more dust. This is to be repeated until all 200g of samples are loaded.
6. Once all sample are finish loaded, let the system run for another 5 minutes to ensure
all dust trapped in the piping are delivered into the baghouse.
7. Then shut off the blower while maintaining operation of pulsed jet solenoid valve for
another 10 shots to ensure the bag(s) are adequately cleaned.
8. Clean up the walls and bag(s) with a suitable brush or broom using the cleaning
windows located at both sides of the baghouse. Ensure the dusts are settled into the
dust collector as much as possible.
9. Pull out the dust collector, taking care that the dusts would not spill out.
10. Carefully transfer the dusts into a pre-weighed container. Then measure the weight of
the dusts.
11. Calculate the efficiency 

12. Repeat Step 1 until Step 11 with 2 filtering bag(s).

SAFETY PRECAUTION

1. Avoid using abrasive particle sample.

2. Clean the polyester filter bags with extra care to avoid damages to the bags.
3. All bag connections should be checked to ensure clamps are tight
4. After the experiment, the cleaning mechanism system should be kept in operation
for a few minutes to ensure good removal of collected dust and avoid unnecessary
pressure drop. Do not over clean the filter bag.
5. Pre-heat either the collector or incoming gas to avoid condensation of the fitter
medium.
6. All cleaning mechanisms should be timed to see if working properly and in the
right sequence.

MAINTENANCE

1. Inspect the inside of the baghouse frequently.

2. Inspect the solenoids and pulsing valve regularly to ensure a loud compressed air
blast.
3. Check the compressed air system for any leakage in the header or piping.
