QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTION GUIDELINES

FORMS STRIPPING

VERSION 2020
Developmental Quality Program
Quality Control Inspection Guidelines - Forms Stripping
Objective :
 To assist External CM’s and Contractors Quality Assurance-Quality Control
Engineers / Inspector in the course of Inspection before/during and after Form
Stripping.

 To supplement to the existing Approved Method of Statement for Forms Stripping,

Execution and Inspection.
Scope :
 The guidelines shall apply to all SMDC Projects for all permanent works. The
scope of work covers the method and procedures and reference documents
needed for Forms Stripping activities.

PREPARATORY WORKS

i. General Contractors shall submit for approval Method of Statement in Forms Stripping for
Horizontal and Vertical Structure to the Consultant.

ii. General Contractors and Ready-mixed Concrete Supplier shall conduct Compression
Concrete Testing, witness by External CM. Then, External CM will validate the result and
give go signal to proceed if the result comply with the specification.

iii.General Contractors shall route Inspection Work Request in order to notify the Trade
Contractors.

iv.General Contractor shall secure the approval of Inspection Work Request prior to
commence the Forms Stripping.

BEFORE FORMS STRIPPING

i. Obtain the Compression Concrete Test Result thru External CM with their
validation that comply with Specification from the Consultant.
ii. Secure the approved Inspection Work Request thru External CM.
iii.Follow and adhere the Approved Method of Statement by Consultant.
iv.Forms Stripping from concrete section should not make the structural element
to:
 Collapse under self-load or under design load.
 Deflect the structural member excessively in short or the long term.
 Physically damage the structural member when formworks in removed.
v. The following points must be kept in mind during formworks removal whether
the structure will be prone to:
Cracks formation due to thermal contraction of concrete.

Note:
After formwork stripping. If there is a significant risk of any of the crack/s damages, it is
better to delay the removal time of formwork. If formwork have to remove for optimizing
the concrete construction activities, then these structures must be cover well to prevent
such damages.
Quality Control Inspection Guidelines for Forms Stripping

Unless otherwise specified on

approved plans and specification, the
following values of concrete strength
is consider for stripping of formwork
for various types of concrete
structural members. However, subject
for the approval by the Consultant.

DURING STRIPPING OF FORMS

Slab and Beams and all suspended structure:

1. For slab and beam and other suspended
structure, always provide (3) three strong
floors from active/working floor. E.g.,
Active/working floor the shoring/props must
be 100%, next floor must be still 100%
shoring/props, then next lower floor must be
75% of shoring/props and next lower floor
must be 50% of shoring/props. (subject for
approval of Consultant)

2. Formwork should not be remove until the concrete has developed sufficient strength to support all
loads placed upon it. The time required before form stripping depends on the structural function of the
member and the rate of strength gain of the concrete.

3. The form stripping procedure should be supervise by Contractor and External CM, as approved by
Consultant to ensure that quality of hardened concrete in structural member, i.e. it should be free from
or has minimum casting defects such as honeycombing, size and shape defects etc.

 These defects in concrete influence the strength and stability of structure. Thus, immediate repair
works can be do or the members can be reject. (Submit proposal of rectification prior to proceed the
repair, which is according to the approved methodology).

4. Beam and joist bottoms should remain in place until final removal of all shoring under them has done.

5. Joist forms should be designed and removed so that

the shores may be remove temporarily to permit removal
of joist forms but must be replace at once. The shores and
joists will be dismantle beginning from the middle of the
member’s span, continuing symmetrically up the supports.

6. The approval from the Structural Designer shall

be obtain for the sequence and pattern of forms
stripping.

structure.
1.All vertical structure should be cure based on the
approved specification and stripping time/period by the
Consultant.

2.Formwork should not be remove until the concrete

has developed sufficient strength to support all loads
placed upon it. The time required before forms stripping
depends on the structural function of the member and
the rate of strength gain of the concrete.

CLEANING
Any concrete adhering to the forms must be
removed before reuse of the forms. The
sooner it is removed the easier it will be and
less damage sustained by the forms.
 Materials
 Steel forms
 Metal scraper
 Plywood forms
 Metal scraper or bass brush

If the forms are to be reused later, it is important to:
1. Stacked to prevent distortion 3. Protected from heat, wind and rain
2. Stacked to prevent rising dampness 4. Protection of contact surfaces particularly with “off-form”
forms.

Proper stock pilling
Preparation for storage to prevent steel forms rusting during prolonged storage it is advisable to
coat them with a thin film of oil of a type, which is not injurious to concrete. If sump oil is used, it
will need to be removed before the forms are reused for columns, which are to be cement
rendered or “off-form” finish will result due to staining.
