Literary Devices, Techniques and Figures of Speech

Competency:
 Compare and Contrast the various 21st century literary genres and their elements,
structures, and traditions from across the globe. (EN12Lit-IId-25)

Objectives: At the end of the week, students are expected to:

 Identify literary genres across the globe;


 Construct a text using the elements of genres, structure and traditions; and
 Promote the importance of 21st century literary genres.

Key Concepts:

Genres of Literature

Fiction
- Is a dream of the writer, made visible on the page. It may be the writer’s
lived experience or it may be entirely imagined.
- Literature created from the imagination, not presented as fact, though it
may be based on a true story or situation.
Elements of Fiction
a. Character- aperson , an animal, or an imaginary creature that takes the part in the
action of the story.
Character types:
- Protagonist – the main character of the story that is most central to the
action of the story.
- Antagonist- the person or thing working against the protagonist, or hero,in
the story.

b. Characterization- the techniques an author uses to develop the personality of a


character in literary work.
- physical appearance and personality
- speech, behavior, and actions
- thoughts and feelings
- interactions with other characteristics
c. setting – the time and place n which the action occurs. Look for clues in the opening
paragraphs of the story or novel.
d. Point of View- it is refer to who tells the story and how it s told
* 1st Person- the story is told by one ofc the characters in the story. The characters uses
the pronouns/ and we.
* 3rd Person- the story is told by the narrator who stands outside of the story and
observes the events as they unfold. The narrator uses the pronouns she, he, and they.
e. Plot- the action element in fiction , is the arrangement of events that make up a story. It
is based on a key conflict.
f. theme- is the central idea or meaning of a story.
g. symbolization- A symbol is a person, object, image, word, or event that evokes a range
of additional meaning beyond and usually more abstract that is literal significance.

h. Tone- is the author’s implicit attitude toward the reader, subject, and the people,
places, and events in a work as revealed by the elements of the author’s style.

Non- Fiction- Like Fiction, non-fiction also has a sub-genre called “literary nonfiction”
that refers to literature based on the fact but written in creative way, making it as
enjoyable to read as fiction.

Performance Task:
Directions: The writer of the poem, Padre Faura Witness the Execution of Rizal” used the
figure of speech, Personification in comparing a hero to a star. He is Dr. Jose P. Rizal. Just
like Jose Rizal, you have also good attributes that make up a good person. Think of good
traits that you have. Compare yourself to a Non- Human Subject. Use Simile as a figure of
speech. Write at least 10 sentences that will justify your comparison.
