PHILIPPINE LITERATURE
(LITERARY GENRES)

In this module, you will be taught how to understand pre-colonial Philippine


literature as a means of connecting to the past; various reading styles; ways of
determining word meaning; the sounds of English and the prosodic features of
speech; and correct subject-verb agreement.

THE BIG IDEA


Literature is an ART that aims at producing beauty in writing and pleasure in the reader. It is a term used to
describe written or spoken material. Literature comes from a LATIN word “Iitera” which means letters.

 Determining the Literary Genres:


Lesson:
PHILIPPINE LITERATURE -is a diverse and rich group of works that has evolved side-by-side with the country’s
history.
Literature can generally be divided into two types: PROSE AND POETRY .
• Prose consists of those written within the common flow of conversation in sentences and paragraphs.
• Poetry refers to those expressions in verse, with measure and rhyme, line and stanza and has a more melodious
tone.
• Novels – a long narrative divided into chapters and events are taken from true-to-life stories.
examples:

Short Story – This is a narrative involving one or more characters; one plot and one single expression
examples:

• Plays- This is presented on a stage, it is divided into acts and each act has many scenes.
Examples:

• Legends- a traditional story or group of stories told about a particular person or place. Formerly the term
legend meant a tale about a saint. Some legends are the unique property of the place or person that they depict.
Examples:

• Fables- a short tale to teach a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters.
Examples:

• Biography- a written account of another person's life. Examples:

• Poetry- writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and
arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm
