ABSTRACT

Parental Involvement in the Formation Program and Student Participation in the Church

Activities of a Catholic School

Sr. Yoo, Jae Soo (Esther), RCM

This study analyzed the underlying schools of thought in determining the extent of

parental involvement in the formation program and student participation in the church activities

of St. Carmen Salles School.

The data needed by this study came from the questionnaires made by the researcher

herself answered by the parents and students who are the recipients of the All My Kids’

Scholarship Foundation, the school’s benefactors.

Guided by Lev Vygotsky Social Constructivism theory, the ensuing analysis found out

that there was no significant difference in the extent of parental involvement when parents in the

formation program are grouped according to age, educational attainment, and family monthly

income.

The findings show that the young parents are more committed in the formation program

compared to the older ones in terms of involvement. Reflected on the results are the parents

whose educational attainment is High school level appears to be more involved in the formation

program than those whose educational attainment achieved tertiary level and below, and

elementary level. Surprisingly, those parents who are considered as new members of the

formation program appears to be more committed in the formation than those who have been

members of the program for a long period of time. As far as income is concerned, parents who
have high family monthly income seem to be more supportive in the formation program than

those who belong to the low-income earners.

Basing on the statistics of this study, as far as relationship between parental involvement

in the formation program and the participation of program scholars in the Church activities is

concerned, it strongly shows that there was a significant relationship between parental

involvement in the formation program and the participation of program scholars in the Church

activities.

The findings of this study call for a serious thought on the integration between the

research made and enhancement of the formation program of St. Carmen Salles School since the

results clearly show how the formation program can benefit families in different aspects since it

enables parents to convey to their children what they have learned and experienced with self-

confidence through the school’s parental Formation program. Additionally, through this

program, the children in the family will be honed to establish a Catholic identity through spiritual

formation as backed up by the results of this study proving that the parents can transfer their

knowledge to their children as educators in their house which makes it easier for the school to

fulfill its mission.

Future researchers are encouraged to delve on the different approaches presented in this

research and use it as a basis to scaffold their own literary pursuits from this study.
