Activity 1:
Use Virtual Earthquake to locate an epicenter

State University Los Angeles. Use it to select the demonstration or the interactive
mode to learn how epicenters are located. (You may even try for the Virtual
Seismologist Certificate if you like, but it is not required here.) Write down how
important facts about an earthquake are measured.
Activity 2:
Look up Recent Earthquakes on the internet. What was the magnitude of the largest
earthquake recorded this past week? How would you rate it using the Mercalli Scale?

Activity 3:
Use the Internet to find out if you live in an earthquake-prone area. If you do, which of
the above secondary effects are most likely to occur where you live? Why? If you do not
live in an earthquake-prone area, use the nearest earthquake-prone locality to complete
