|| OM SAI RAM||

Shri Dattatreya is a very ancient incarnation, highly

venerated through the ages. Dattatreya – a Universal
Guru manifested in the recess of time of 'Kaliyug'.
Trimurti Avatar – the united and single incarnation of
Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Dattatreya was born as the
son of Atri Maharshi and Anusuya. Datta jayanti comes
on the full moon day in the month of Margasheersh.
Anusuya, did severe Tapas to get a son equal in merits
as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Saraswati, Lakshmi and
Parvati, the goddess trinity, became jealous of Anusuya.
They deputed their husbands to test her virtuousness.
The three gods appeared before Anusuya in the disguise of sanyasis and asked her to
give them food naked. Anusuya thought for a while & She uttered a mantra and
sprinkled water on them, turning them into babies. She then gave them food, as they
wished. When Atri returned to his ashram Anusuya narrated the event, which he already
knew through his psychic powers. He appreciated Anusuya, that the Gods who will not
give darsan , came to her because of her tapas.when the gods did not return, their
wives got worried and rushed to Anusuya. The goddesses begged her forgiveness and
requested her to return their husbands. Anusuya accepted their request. The Trimurti
then appeared in their true form, before Atri and Anusuya, and blessed them with a son
Dattatreya. Though Dattatreya is considered a form of all the three deities, he is
especially considered an avatar of Vishnu. His siblings the moon-god Chandra and the
sage Durvasa are regarded forms of Brahma and Shiva. Sri Dattatreya remained an
Avadutha throughout his life – a sage who remains in pure nature. He was a supreme
yogi. Dattatreya narrated the secrets of Vedanta to Lord Subrahmanya and this
teaching later came to be known as Avadhuta Gita.
Sri Dattatreya is always depicted as holding Kamandalu and Japamala (representing
Lord Brahma), Conch and Discuss (Shanka Chakra represents Lord Vishnu), Trident
and Damaru (Trishula represents Lord Shiva). The Cow behind represents earth , 4
Dogs represents 4 Vedas and Audumbar in itself represents Datta Principle.
Shri Dattatreya is glorified by Chanting of “Sri Gurudeva Datta” or “Sri Guru Datta, Jai
Guru Datta”. Sri Dattatreya is often worshipped in the form of Padukas as can be seen
in all the Famous Datta Kshetras like Ganagapur, Girnar, Mahur, Narsobawadi,
Kurwapur etc. The Holy Audumbar Tree also signifies the Presence of Lord Dattatreya.

3. Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj Akkalkot (1838A.D-1878A.D)

As per the most popular belief, Shri Nrusimha Swami, after helping and spiritually
uplifting a large number of people over a few decades, went away to the Himalayas for
penance and went into Samadhi. In the Samadhi state He remained for about three
hundred years. With the passage of time a huge anthill grew over him and he was lost

to the outside world. One day accidentally a woodcutter’s axe fell on the bushes grown
around the ant hill. He was shocked to find blood stains on the blade of the axe. He
cleared the anthill and Lo, he found a Yogi in meditation. The Yogi slowly opened his
eyes and consoled the dumbfounded woodcutter saying that it was the Divine Will for
Him to re-appear in the world to resume His mission. This Yogi, in his new role came
to be known as Swami Samarth.

He came to Akkalkot in 1856 where he continued his physical existence for 22 years.

He came to Akkalkot on the invitation of one Chintopant Tol and stayed at a place on
the outskirts of the town. Akkalkot is situated in district Solapur of Maharashtra state of
India.
