INTRODUCTION OF MALAY CARVING
● The best wood carving is from Terengganu and Kelantan. Most of them actually from the one
generation to the other generation, the craft design can be divided into ukiran halus (fine carving)
and ukiran kasar (rough carving).

● Ukiran Halus involves the carving of relief patterns, keris (short Malay dagger), bed heads and
cupboard tops. Ukiran Kasar, refers to the carvings on larger objects like furniture, pillars,
windows, room portions and eaves of roofs.

● The basic design behind Malay wood carving is the awan larat (extending clouds). Its usage in a
composition is governed by four principles.

● Firstly, the design element must be evenly distributed in the composition. Secondly, the empty
spaces or uncarved areas should be the same as carved areas. Thirdly, animals or humans should
never be depicted and fourthly, when there is a central motif, the other secondary design
elements are to be repeated around it.
INTRODUCTION OF MALAY CARVING
● Common inspirational elements include holy verses from the Qu’ran and plants such as bean
tendrils, ground leaves, and leaves of the water lettuce and keris carving.
TECHNIQUE OF MALAY CARVING
● Wood carving can be done with various techniques and the use of each technique depends a lot
on the abilities and skills of the carpenter. It will enhance the diversity of technique that will show
different type of wood carving.
● Three main techniques and style in the art of carving a Malay:

TYPES OF POLAR IN MALAY CARVING
● There are many pattern that can be applied in wood carving. The reason of having polar is to
indicate the complexity of wood carving depends on the pattern and concept and additionally to
make it more attractive.
● There are three main pattern or polar in malay traditional carving:

Pola Bujang Pola Pembidang Pola Pelengkap

INITIAL IDEA
Calligraphy Motive (Motif seni khat & kaligrafi)

● The example of malay carving that combine with islamic elements:

FINAL DESIGN
CONCEPT: UNITY
Main concept
● Main inspiration derived from a Malay philosophy (tumbuh berpunca,
berpunca penuh rahsia, tajam tidak menujah lawan, lilit tidak memaut
kawan)

● The malay philosophy starts with the term “tumbuh berpunca, berpunca
penuh rahsia” explains and describe the composition of the flower in the
design where it can be seen the movement from the hidden source.

● “Tajam tak menujah lawan, lilit tidak memaut kawan” explains the leaves
surrounding the flower that not overlap each other and overshadowing
other natural elements besides the flower.

● The composition of the flower also explain the movement and the growth
of the flower.
POLAR
Pola Pelengkap

● The polar that has been used is “pola pelengkap” that describes the completeness and and to
enhance the flora motive as a background from the root, branches, leaves and flowers

● The characteristics of polar pelengkap are the combination of polar bujang and polar pemidang. This
type of polar emphasize on the flora. There are many types of pola pelengkap such as “motif sulur
daun” and “motive bunga semangat.”

● Most of the polar pelengkap suitable to use as ventilation panel so it will allow the wind flow from
the outside to the house.
MOTIVE OF DESIGN
Orchid Flower
● The motive that been used for the carving is the orchid flower motive
which is our main element in our design. It is because orchid flower will
symbolize the elegance and luxury.

● The main attention is to show the elegance which is “keanggunan” of

Malay tradition back then that we can apply to the modern days.

● The other main reason we add three flowers are to show the three
different races which are Malay, Chinese and Indian.

● These three orchids will connected to the leaves that will represents the
growth of races in harmony.
MOTIVE OF DESIGN
Malay philosophy: Awan larat punca rahsia

● The meaning of Awan larat punca rahsia is It is for this reason that it
has a huge impact on the sculpture and gives meaning to the
sculptor.

● The other element that we used “the awan larat punca rahsia”
because this motive described the movement and the growth of the
flower from the one origin and then the growth of the flowers to fill
the whole carving.
