NAME : B.SAI SHANMUKH

SEMESTER : 7TH SEMESTER
ROLL NUMBER : 18C31C4002
SUBJECT : PRE THESIS
COLLEGE : VARAHA COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND
PLANNING.
ABSTRACT

• As my project site is in Visakhapatnam , there are many public

spaces related to food ,entertainment , but there are no
combined spaces bringing all of them together and when we
observe the ambience its all contemporary . So in my project I
want to Design a recreational space comprising of spaces like
cafeterias , public reading spaces , art and craft exhibitions ,
landscaping elements like covered seating spaces , elements of
hardscaping and some required aminities like public
washrooms ,waiting area. Ill be designing these elements such
that they will be reflecting cultural ambience.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE

• AIM:
• To design a recreational space ,which can create a ambience of south Indian
culture.
• OBJECTIVE:
• Combining different spaces which they be a part of the recreational space.
• Proper zoning must be considered ,to place elements and create a proper people
flow.
• Combining the spaces and the cultural elements ,such that the place creates a
different cultural ambience ,and standsout from the other public spaces.
• Know the cultural elements which will be incorporated in the design and
creates a cultural ambience.
BACKGROUND STUDY AND
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION:

• When we see different recreational spaces they are

mostly of the contemporary styles , so the lacking
element in the public spaces is that , is all the public
spaces brings a contemporary ambience .
• But the places which reflect the cultural ambience are
lacking .
• Where my idea is culture is not only about praying or
worship ,but theres much to look in it .
NEED AND FEASIBILITY

• The idea to design a recreational spaces started with

the idea of cultural elements , when we observe the
public spaces or entertainment zones ,they don’t create
a good ambience in that area , so I thought of designing
recreational space bringing different activities together
and creating a cultural ambience , where these kind of
spaces are lacking , these not only create a cultural
ambience but also a tourist place and also a attraction
at that particular place.
SCOPE

• These kind of themed recreational spaces creates a unique

ambience in a particular place.
• In this project the aspects which will be covered are zoning ,
landscaping , interiors and structures.
• The project will cover on details like how the cultural
elements are incorporated in the design.
• The design is about how the cultural elements are not only
incorporated , but how they properly make sense .
• Place like these will be a tourist attraction at that particular
place and then function as relaxation area for people.
LIMITATIONS

• The will not be covering any detailed structural details.

• Even the project is cultural themed , the structures or
any part of the design will be covering or represent any
kind of religious aspects or symbols.

DESKTOP STUDY ON CULTURAL
ELEMENTS

• As my aim is to design a cultural themed recreational

space , first of all the source from which ill be
incorporating the cultural elements are the temples and
art .
• As the cultural theme is only limited for the south
Indian cultural , ill study the temples and art of south
India.
DESKTOP STUDY ON
CULTURAL ELEMENTS
• When we discuss about the architecture styles in
India ,broadly there three styles.
• The Nagara style ,Dravidian style and the Vesara style.
• The Nagara style is for the north india .
• The Dravidian style is for the south india.
• As we are discussing about the Dravidian style ,the states
which come under these category are
• AndhraPradesh
• Telangana
• Kerala
• Karnataka
• Tamilnadu
• Now let us discuss about the temple architecture and
art style of Andhra Pradesh.
• Venkateswara swamy temple , Tirumala.
•Simhachalam.
• Veerabhadra temple.
• VEERABHADRA TEMPLE
CARVINGS
• When we observe the architecture style of the temples
in Andhra pradesh , we can obsereve that the vimana
of all the temples are the same ,which is the linear type.
• When it comes to the sikhara type there are two types
of sikharas ,one is the barrel vault type another one is
the octagonal sphere.
• The vimana is ornamented with sculptures but not
coloured.
• ART IN ANDHRA PRADESH
• KALANKARI IS THE ART STYLE OF
ANDHRAPRADESH
Telangana.

• Thousand pillar temple.

• Ramappa temple.
• ART IN TELANGANA.
• Cheriyal Scroll Paintings and the Mughal Paintings.
Kerala.

• Padmanabha swami temple.

• Sabarimala temple.
Kerala.

• While we observe the architecture style in

Padmanabhaswami temple it follows the dravidian
style which is the vimana and sikhara , when it comes
to the internal part of the temple it follows the kerala
vernacular architecture that is the thatched roofs and
the courtyrads.
• When it comes to the sabarimala temple ,it follows
only the vernacular style ,but not the dravidian style
• ART IN KERALA.
•  Kalamezhuthu, a ritual art in which the pictures of Gods and Goddesses
are drawn on the floor using coloured powders, is another system of
painting prevalent in Kerala.
Karnataka.

• Virupaksha temple.
• While we observe the style ,the vimana is linear with a
barrel vault sikhara ,it has no intricate detail of
ornmentation , but broadly it has columns and some
some sculptures on it.
• While we see the internal part of the temple , it has
good sculpted columns , carved walls , painted murals
on ceiling and walls.
• ART IN KARNATAKA
• Chittara is the tradition art in kerala.
Tamilnadu

• Meenakshi temple
Nataraja temple.
• When we observe the architecture style the vimana is linear and
the sikhara is barrel vault type .
• When it comes to the ornamentation of the vimana ,it is detailed
with beautifully painted sculptures
• The corridors are long with a well carved columns on either side.
• The walls are decorated with human figures.
• Finally the ceiling is decorated and painted , in some parts the
ceilings are painted with history regarding the temple .
• Art in tamilnadu
• Thanjavur painting.
JUSTIFICATION

• From the above desktop studies , the things I could

collect details about the spatial analysis and how the
cultural elements are incorporated in the design .
• When it comes to the study regarding the temples and
art , the information which ive collected is what are the
elements of culture and how they are implemented in
the south Indian states.
