The Solution is Dilution!

Lab Investigation
PROCEDURE
1. Measure out a healthy amount of sodium chloride on the scale.
19 g
● Original mass of sodium chloride = ____________

2. Determine the amount of moles (think about molar mass) in your sample of sodium chloride.

________ 55.44 g
19 g NaCl x ________________________ = 0.34 mol
3. Measure out an amount of your choice of H2O in a graduated cylinder. (1000 mL = 1 L)
0.05 L
● Original volume of solution in liters = ____________
20 mL
4. Combine the salt, water, and 2 drops of food coloring in a test tube. Calculate the molarity (M)
of your original solution.
6.8 M
● Original molarity = ____________

5. You will dilute (make your solution weaker) 3 times by adding water.
● Add 3 mL to your test tube for each dilution
● Calculate and record the new volume of the total solution.
Volume of H2O New Total Volume of New Molarity
Added Solution

Dilution #1 3 mL 0.053 L 6.42 M

Dilution #2 3 mL 0.056 L 6.07 M
Dilution #3
3 mL 0.059 L 5.76 M
3 mL 3 mL 3 mL 3 mL 6. Fill in the drawing to the left with volume of water added
@ each dilution & the new molarity (M) to represent what you
did in your experiment.

7. Which dilution represents the solution with the weakest

concentration? The dilution with the weakest
5.76 M
6.07 M
6.42 M
6.8 M

concentration was the 4th one.

8. How would the process of dissolving change if you
changed the solute (used a different substance)?
The dissolving process would’ve changed because
different solutes have different rates of dissolution.
9. How would the process of dissolving change if you used hot water instead of cold water? Does
temperature affect solubility (ability to dissolve)?
If we had used hot water, then the solute would’ve
dissolved faster because of the heat.
10. The solubility of glucose (sugar) is 1000 g in every 0.5L of water, while the solubility of sodium
chloride is 180 g in every 0.5 L of water. Which solute is able to dissolve more quickly?
Glucose will dissolve quicker
● Which solute might require some help (stirring/changing shape/increasing
temperature/adding pressure) to dissolve better?
Sodium chloride would need more stirring/pressure
