THE NINETH AND THE TENTH MEETINGS

HOW TO USE DO, DOES AND DID AS WELL AS HAVE, HAS AND HAD (AS AUXILIARY
VERBS)
Before we go to the discussion, you must know some verbs forms:
Verb I Verb-ing Verb II Verb III
Eat eating ate eaten (makan)
Drink drinking drank drunk (minum)
Buy buying bought bought (membeli)
Open opening opened opened (membuka)
Close closing closed closed (menutup)
Bring bringing brought brought (membawa)
Take taking took taken (mengambil/membawa)
Put putting put put (meletakkan)
See seing saw seen (melihat)

I. Do, does (Present) and did (Past) as auxiliary verbs (kata kerja bantu) are usually used in
the negative and interrogative forms and must be followed by Verb I (Kata Kerja bentuk I,
murni tanpa embel-embel):
Please pay attention to the short conversation below and then translate it into Indonesian!
A: Did you see the girl?
B: Which girl did you say? Do you mean the girl who is standing in the corner of the street (the girl
standing on the corner of the street?)
A: Yes, she does? Nevertheless, do you see what she brings? No, I do not see anything.
B. Please look at her once more! Do you see it?
A. Yes, I do. I see her now. She brings jewelry. What jewelry is it? Is it a diamond or not?
B: I think it is a diamond, but what she will do with the diamond? Do you know or not?
A. I do not know, exactly and it is not our responsibility? It is her affair. Okay.
B. Well, I understood what you mean.

Notes:
1. In English, when you speak or write a present sentence, so after she/he/it/Amir as the third
singular person, it must be followed by verb(s/es), such as: what she brings or drinks or copies or
makes?
2. The man or the girl who is standing over there. The certain words such as ‘who is’ in this
sentence sometimes may be reduced/omitted (boleh dikurangi/dihilangkan) to be the man or the
girl standing over there, and it is called a sentence with present participle (verb ing that function
as an adjective). This will be explained in details in the special meeting.

II. Have, Has, Had as auxiliary verbs may be used in the positive, negative and interrogative forms
and must be followed by Verb III.
Pay attention to the short conversation below and then translated into Indonesian:
Arman: Where have you been Ani?
Ani: I have been the book store.
Arman: Have you bought an English book Ani?
Ani: No, I have not.
Arman: How could you do your homework without the English book?
Ani: Do not (Don’t) worry Arman, since my elder sister has one book, and I can use it. Now, I have
finished it.
Arman: That is good Ani. May I see yours?
Ani: Yes, of course, but do not (don’t) cheat it!
Arman: Okay, I just see it for a moment. I only need to know how to make it.
Ani: Have you seen it? Please, be hurry, I do not have a long time for you, since I need to go out.
Arman: Yes, now I have seen it. Here it is. Thanks
Ani: You are welcome.
Notes:
The words Do not or Did not is recommended for English academic writing
(direkomendasikan dalam tulisan akademik bahasa Inggris and the words don’t or didn’t is
only used in conversation.
III. Exercise for the Next Meeting (Tenth Meeting)
Please make a conversation as a combination of do, does, did and have, has, had minimum 15
sentences. Please include, the words you know about your Department such as the words about
MHU Department, MD Department, PMI Department, Journalistic Department, KPI Department,
and others. Then you must submitted in words form file combined via your head of group (KETI or
His secretary or His vice) with your task translation previously.
