Speech Style Activity

1. Why do you need to adjust your manner of speaking to the speech situation? Cite an example to
explain your answer.

We need to adapt our way of speaking to the circumstance of expression in order to understand
each other. We ought to pick the language variety that we think is suitable for a certain speech scenario.
We need to know the social context of the interaction, which is defined by various situational variables.
These factors involve the participants, the location, the purpose of communication, the topic and the
mode or channel of linguistic expression. Together, these aspects make up the speech situation.
Depending on the aspects of the speech situation, we consciously or subconsciously select which
language or vocabulary should be used or observed. For instance, in a business setting and giving a
speech or a presentation the speeches are straightforward and it is a formal speech style. The speaker
avoids using slang words as much as possible and has always been prepared beforehand. Complex
sentences and noun phrases are well ordered, logically sequenced and highly coherent. On the other
hand, when communicating to our significant other, we often use an intimate style of speech. The
conversation is grammar unnecessary since the participants in this type of situation know each other
extremely well.

2. In comparison with the personal manner of communication used in consultative, casual, and
intimate style of speaking, in what way or ways are the formal and frozen styles considered
impersonal in nature?

Among the different types of speech styles and in their personal manner of communication, formal
and frozen styles are considered impersonal in nature. The explanation behind this is that we don't
normally speak like that. In frozen and formal types, we tend to modify it a lot in order to be coherent and
elaborate, and the choice of grammar and vocabulary is important. Commonly, these styles include few
personal pronouns, noun phrases and passive voices. The more formal the style, the more likely it is to be
distant and impersonal. We need to filter out in frozen and formal styles, and we generally don't filter out
what we want to say to people we're comfortable talking to, including our friends and relatives.

3. In selecting your style in communication, should you consider the kind if listeners or audience
you expect to have? Why or why not?

In communicating, we should consider the kind if listeners or audience we expect to have.

Speakers communicate to different audiences accordingly. To give a small example, people tell their
grandmas about their new "significant others" in a different way than they say to their best friend.
Likewise, people talk about trees differently with their high school biology instructor than they do with
their younger siblings; and speakers also have to debate about public policy differently from Republicans
than Democrats. Two key questions direct the adaptation of viewers in a speech situation: who are they?
What attributes are important to them? Taking an audience-centered approach is crucial because the
efficacy of the speaker would be increased if the presentation is generated and presented in an
appropriate manner.
