PROJECT PROCESS & PLAN

I am Marwa
Al-Hammadi. I have
created this
Hello! presentation to share
with you my process of
writing a COVID related
children’s book!

2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1
For this project proposal, I plan on making a children’s picture book
about this pandemic. With everything that has occurred, several
groups have suffered: the elderly, parents, teenagers, and especially
children. They have the youngest minds, which lack experience and
knowledge for reference. Place yourself back to when you were in first
grade. Now, imagine that within a few days, you were told you could no
longer go to school and see your friends, and you could no longer see
your grandparents. These younger generations are losing crucial time
to develop their interpersonal and social skills. Therefore, I want to
write a book to help these children slightly understand what is going
on, because they deserve to know. Despite being so young, these
children must recognize the importance of things like masks and
social distancing to comprehend the danger that this virus brings.

COMPARABLES
Effects of COVID-19 on the Health of Children
Mandated social isolation can cause several mental health problems that may affect
children in the future. Several families were already financially struggling, but with
the pandemic, several parents had to make tough decisions. This pressure causes
family tension, and may create a stressful environment for the kids at home. Since
several schools have shut down, children no longer have a structured routine, and will
certainly be less active. On more serious notes, several children relied on the
nutritional meals and programs provided from the school. Thus, the pandemic may
bring food insecurity to many families and their children, especially those who are
financially unstable. By losing their school and different after-school activities,
children will no longer be able to work on their social and leadership skills. This may
lead to signs of loneliness and depression in younger generations. To add, children
may lose the freedom that comes at school, and they may feel held back by their
parents’ necessary but strict rules. Overall, this pandemic affects children's’ physical,
mental, and emotional health in a multitude of ways.

Lucy’s Mask-Lisa Sirkis Thompson
This children’s book was written by a
mother with four-year-old twin
daughters, to teach them the
importance of wearing a mask and
help them enjoy wearing their masks.
She had been really struggling, like
many other parents around the
world, to get her children to wear
their masks and feel comfortable. By
describing the crazy times of this
pandemic in a simple way, her
daughters were able to find some fun
in wearing a mask.

The Day the Lines Changed: by Kelley Donner
This children’s book is an extremely
simple way for kids to understand
how a pandemic works. The words
“pandemic” and “Coronavirus” are
never used because the author
simplified these large and confusing
topics into easier concepts. The entire
story revolves around lines and their
journey through a virus outbreak,
including vaccines! 100% of all profits
from the book in March and April,
2020 were donated to the Covid-19
charities that support children’s
mental health.

COLLABORATIONS
For this leadership project proposal, I will be using the help of my family, Mr.
Steckley, and several elementary teachers in the community. Firstly, in the
planning process of my project, I will ask for help from my sisters and parents to
give me feedback on the visuals, readability, and overall efficiency of my online
book. To add, my sister (Mawada) will be able to give me valuable suggestions
since she has experience with this project. Secondly, I plan on asking Mr. Steckley
to help me share my online story with a few of the schools in our community.
Being a teacher himself, Mr. Steckley will have a few connections with fellow
teachers in the community. As a result, he can connect me with opportunities I
wouldn’t have previously had. Lastly, by creating infographics and creating an
easily accessible online book, I can share my book with the several elementary
schools in the neighbourhood. By doing so, I can quickly, efficiently, and safely
share my message with the children in the community. With my hard effort and
support from my family and teachers, I believe I can execute my idea just how I
imagined it.

PROJECT SAMPLE
For my project sample, I am including a
few interactive activities that relate to my
E-book. These include customizable and
easy to make bookmarks, and mask
chains. All of the activities I chose closely
relate to making this COVID experience
simpler and more fun for younger
children. The mask chains are easy way
for children to make something their
own. To add, it will make it easier for both
parents and children if they can hold onto
their mask even when they aren’t wearing
it. To relate the activity to my book, I
chose to introduce DIY bookmarks. This
craft will encourage them to read more
books and make learning seem less like
homework and more like fun!

MARKETING &

6
PROMOTION
To market my project and get the community involved I plan on
making an infographic to share with the various teachers I
reach out to. To ensure that my message is being targeted at the
right age group, I will make the infographic colourful and fun.
That way, both the teachers and students will be engaged. It will
include a brief summary of what my book is, why I chose to
write it, and why I think it could help. Since my project is aimed
at younger generations, it wouldn’t be beneficial to share my
infographic with our school. However, I do plan on asking my
friends with younger siblings to share my idea and message.
With COVID, I had to think outside of the box to find a way to
create a book without actually making it in a physical form. This
online format is efficient and easy which will improve the
interest in my project. I will ensure to showcase my book in a
short and eye-catching way to fit the packed schedule of several
teachers around the region.
