Position Paper

Technology is a crucial part of the main goal when discussing education. The

rhetoric is always about preparing students for the future and if technology is stripped

away the students will be severely handicapped for the future. The ever-changing future

holds more technology than has ever been present. There is no slowing the

advancements we are making and the places they will likely hold in our society. In the

event of a district deciding to remove technology as a part of the curriculum I find that it

will also severely hamper the retention of the students and information.

In the year 2020 the importance of technology in the education field was heavily

highlighted because without it the stunting of student learning would have been far more

severe. Without technology present the inability to teach would have been a mess and

there would not have been a safe solution for all involved. If that alone is not enough for

technology importance to speak volumes then not much else is.It has become a valued

and core aspect in regards to the way we learn things. There is so much power in a

table and a student who has any type of question simply pulls out their phone or goes to

a computer and looks it up and has the answer in an instance. Removing technology

from the job squashes one's commitment to curiosity whereas the job is to nurture it. As

stated “The effective use of digital learning tools in classrooms can increase student

engagement, help teachers improve their lesson plans, and facilitate personalized

learning. It also helps students build essential 21st-century skills” (AU school of

education, 2020). The newly found means of creating an educational system meant to

be inclusive and allowing students to have consistent access to their education is an

absolute wonder. Reverting back to an almost if not already archaic system will do no

good for the well being of students or staff.

Identification of Standards

The goal of transforming learning through the means of technology is what the

ISTE standards are all about. Catering the level of technology to suit the grade level

and make a progressive movement through the level of understanding and involvement

of the technology. It's geared at preparing students overtime for their likely need to use

tech in everything they do. In a setting geared towards highschool students the focus of

the lesson plan is the Creative Communicator mostly. 1.6.a Students choose the

appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or

communication.1.6.bStudents create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix

digital resources into new creations.1.6.c Students communicate complex ideas clearly

and effectively by creating or using a variety of digital objects such as visualizations,

models or simulations.1.6.d Students publish or present content that customizes the

message and medium for their intended audiences. In the lesson plan the idea is to get

the students to introduce themselves to me in a manner that employs technology and a

wide range of options for them to express themselves. It will also include literature and

understanding of their favorite books in an attempt to tie in technology to the curriculum.

Specifically for my subject being english It is suited to be their favorite book and giving

them multiple tasks to achieve successful testing and trials at their level of computer

literacy. Utilizing a variety of tools to formulate a representation of themselves for me as

well as to share with their classmates through pictures, drawings, and whatever else

they may be able to think of. Tackling the different tasks needed to be met within the
classroom to show the level of understanding and grade the students accordingly while

also training them for the future usages.

Analyze how complex characters (e.g., those with multiple or conflicting motivations)
develop over the course of a text, interact with other characters, and advance the plot or
develop the theme.

• Objective: Utilizing technology and understanding of how a text can affect a character
students are to create an accurate representation of themselves in relation to their
favorite book and how they would fit into the natural world of the text. By designing a
moodboard to depict the story with collage software and then creating a short narrative
about how they fit into the story with actual text to back their descriptions, as well as a
drawing of the character if they so choose.

• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: (List should include hardware, software, and
all other hands-on instructional materials needed) Canva, PowerPoint, Docs, Word, and
potentially a sheet of paper or a digital drawing.

• Suggested group size: Single Student

• Procedures:The students will be given access to their phone, ipads, laptops, or taken
to a computer lab. Once there they are to find 5-6 pictures that represent the plotline
and best points of their favorite book. Anywhere from the setting to a key point to how
the characters look in their imagination. Once the pictures are gathered they can use
them to make a collage using Canva or Powerpoint. They need to imagine themselves
into their favorite book in an entirely canon way, so using their knowledge from the book
or series they need to create a character or version of themselves. From there the next
step is to write a 1-2 page narrative about the story and how they exist in it. Using the
existing story and creating a new means of adding to it. The software to use to
accomplish that would be word or google docs and it is to be formatted in MLA, if they
don't know what MLA is they should be directed to OWL Perdue. In the event that they
feel capable they can create a drawing paper or digital of themselves in that universe.
Then after all the work is finished they are to present it to me and the class.

• Assessment:The assignment will be graded on participation and accuracy. They will

also get points for getting up and presenting themselves. It'll be an easy 15 point
assignment to start the year off

Book Title: The Unwind Dystology

MoodBoard:
Narrative: From the ages of 13 to 18 if you misbehave your parents can have you

shipped to the government to be retroactively harvested. The process is also known as

Unwinding. Harvesting means that all of your parts will be taken and given to those who

need it. You don't die, it's just the divided state, a split consciousness of muscle

memory. The three main characters Connor, Risa, and Lev are all set to be Unwound

for a variety of reasons. They range from parents to adoption homes to religion but the

common strand between them is they don’t want this to be their end. In a ragtag team

and a variety of different challenges they try to avoid their seemingly sealed fate. My

character can join them in their travels.

I am being unwound by my parents for calling them out on their favoritism towards my

other sibling and for acting out. It was truly minimal means of doing so but they resorted

to this without much hesitation. I meet up with Connor and Risa and we all travel and

traverse the countryside until eventually we find the safety we need to survive. Lev is

still MIA but we think we know where he wandered off to.

I would work on tactical planning and protection of the kids all at the graveyard,

ensuring that no one gets unwound anymore, just for the sake of protecting those I care

about. Sticking with the main characters in a merely supportive role, without much

interference towards them and not really changing much in the way of the story line

because I enjoy the way the books went to the highest extent. My end in the story would

likely be working towards changing the laws and rescuing as many unwinds as I can.
