Teaching technology is very important to the students and staff at ABC Community School.

When this school first opened, we barely had any technology and over the years as technology advances

and grows, we have introduced technology to our students for a learning purpose. Discontinuing the use

of technology in school would be devasting and ultimately taking away a very useful skill for the students

to learn. Year after year the world becomes more digital, using/doing less things on paper, which is good

for the environment of course. But with that being said, teaching the younger generation about technology

will only advance them in life and prepare them for the real world. “According to a CompTIA study, nine

out of 10 students indicated that using technology in the classroom would help prepare them for the

digital future. § By teaching student’s skills like PowerPoint, you can help set your students up for

success. Introducing instructional technology in the classroom at a young age can help prepare students

for future digital demands.” Our job is to prepare our students for their future and taking away something

that will have such a big impact on their life would be setting them up to fail. Technology can/is

expensive but our students are the next generations of the world, we should want them to be the best of

the best, even if the cost can get a little pricey. At ABC Community School we are known for having

great resources and being technology inclined, that isn’t something every school has. We are so privileged

to say we have the use of all the technology that we have and we need to keep providing these resources

to our students and keeping our students parents in good thoughts to know that they are in the best hands

possible. Teaching technology in school keeps us connected with our students, it allows the learning

process for them to be more interesting and fun. This bond we develop with our students wouldn’t be half

of what it is, if it wasn’t for the technology, we are able to create activities and assignments in a way that

it fits into every student’s curriculum.

After reading the two documents “ISTE Standards for Students” and “Nevada Computer and

Technology Standards” there are some differences but I see more similarities. The ISTE standards for

students seem like the “simple” overall student standards for students nationwide. Verses the Nevada

Computer and Technology Standards aim more towards the development in Nevada technology. By that I

mean the Nevada Standards are specified to us in Nevada because it is developed around the teaching and

uses of technology in Nevada in schools. These Standards can be made and specified to a certain state.

The Nevada Standards seem to be more direct to what the standard is. It uses more direct words to explain

what It is, for example “1.B.8.1 Create an original, digital work as a form of personal or group

expression” and “1.B.12.1 Create an original work using digital tools, including planning, research,

editing, and production. The for the ISTE’s the standards are a little but broader, for example Standard 1,

1a “Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develops strategies leveraging technology to

achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.” And then standard

1, 1b “Students build networks and customize their environments in ways that support the learning

process.” These are me technical and seem to have a broader meaning then direct content.

For my lesson plan these are the standards I will be achieving

- ISTE-S Standard #6 Creative Communicator 6a – Students choose the appropriate platforms and

tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication.

- Nevada Computer and Technology Standards 1B.2.1 - Create an original work using a variety of

digital tools as a means of personal or group expression.

Name of Lesson: Letters in a Box
Grade Level Appropriateness: 5th Grade
Technology Content Standard Addressed: Nevada Computer and Technology Standards
1B.2.1 - Create an original work using a variety of digital tools as a means of personal or group
expression.
Other Content Standard Addressed: (5)4.1 use knowledge of format, graphics, sequence,
diagrams, illustrations, charts, and maps to comprehend text [NS/PS 4.5.1]
Objective: Students will understand how to create boxes by using the line/freeform shape tool
and how to insert an image behind the box to indicate that it is “inside” the box. Students will
also be able to identify images that represent the letter that is being proposed.
Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: You will need access to Microsoft Power point or
Apple Keynote or other software’s that have the same tools (line tool, paint, and textbox) that
will allow you to properly demonstrate and create this project.
Suggested group size: Individual
Procedures: You will be creating boxes with each induvial letter of your first name. For
example (Zoe will have THREE boxes ONE for the letter Z, ONE for the letter O and ONE for
the letter E) after you are done creating the boxes you will then make sure that each box is
labeled with a letter in the middle of it. Once you have completed that, NEXT you are going to
find an animal or object that starts with each letter for example (Z, I would look for a picture of a
Zebra) then save that image, go to the insert tab, go to pictures and find that picture you found
and past it. We want the animals “inside” the boxes, so for that, once the picture is pasted move
it onto the box where to belongs, right click and hit move to back. That will give us the look of
the animal or object in the box! Your last step is to type what the animal or object is below the
boxes write it like this -> (ex: Z is for Zebras) Be as creative as you can and have fun with this!
When done please put your First and last name somewhere on your work and today’s date!
How to create a box: Go to your shape drop down and select the freeform
shape tool. Click where you want the box to start, release your mouse, then
hold down SHIFT while you make the line and it will make the line straight,
then click where you want the line to end. Then repeat that to create all four
sides. Once the box is connected it will turn blue. NEXT to make the boxes
stand out better you will need to make the lines thicker. You can do that by
selecting a box, right click, go to format shape and find where you can “contour” or “line
thickness” and go up to 1 point, you can then change the box fill and or lines to WHATEVER
color you would life. BE CREATIVE! See below for an example of what I am expecting!
Pg. 4

QUICK TIP: Right click on that box, hit COPY and then PASTE so that all your boxes are the
SAME SIZE.
Assessment: You will be graded 1-12 point based on the completion of all the steps;
boxes with (four sides) with 1 letter in each box representing a letter of your first name, the line
thickness is at 1 point, you have found an animal or object that represents the letter in the box,
the animal or object is “inside” the box (making sure you right click and hit “Send to Back”);
you have the word of what the animal or object represents (ex: Z is for Zebras) your first and last
name and date somewhere on the project! BE CREATIVE. I want you to express yourself and
have fun with this while learning these basic tools and tips! 😊
