Effectiveness of Modular Learning in Grade 4 Pupils in Jampason Elementary

School

Objectives:

I. To determine the effectiveness of modular learning of grade 4 pupils.

II. To determine if the pupils are motivated in terms of modular learning; and,

III. To evaluate the difference between modular learning and face to face

learning that affects grade 4 pupils.

INTRODUCTION

A novel corona virus outbreak was first documented in Wuhan, Hubei Province,

China in December 2019. The COVID-19 corona virus pandemic has led to mass

scientific conference cancellations, travel restrictions, social distancing, and other

unprecedented prevention measures. The COVID-19 infection is spread from one

person to others via droplets produced from the respiratory system of infected people,

often during coughing or sneezing. Since then, cases have been exported to other

Chinese cities, as well as internationally, highlighting concern of a global outbreak. The

first suspected case in the Philippines was investigated on January 22, 2020 by the

Department of Health.

The Philippine education system is now adapting to the new blended learning as

public schools were set to resume its classes nationwide on October 5, 2020. Despite
the calls for an academic freeze due to the corona virus outbreak, the Department of

Education still believes that education should not be compromised.

“Education cannot wait,” says DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones. To maintain the

education of millions of Filipino students, the government implemented a distance

learning approach. Distance learning, also known as correspondence education or

home study, is a form of education where there is little or no face-to-face interaction

between students and their instructors.

This type of modality has three categories. In which, one of the highly convenient

for most of the typical Filipino students is the Modular Distance Learning. It was also the

most preferred learning system of majority of parents/guardians based on the result of

the Learning Enrollment and Survey Form (LESF).

This research will determine the efficacy of modular learning in Grade 4 pupils

enrolled in Jampason Elementary School. If the pupils are still learning or excess effort

to learn more midst the crisis we have been experiencing. Prior to the pandemic,

modular learning is not yet utilized but now it is, and this research will determine if the

pupil can learn through modular learning and satisfactory ratings for the effectiveness.

The researchers conduct a survey to the parents and their grade 4 pupil to

measure and know the effectiveness of modular learning to their children. It gives the

people an outlook on the results of the survey if modular learning is highly effective or

not.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will be meriting the following:

School Administrator. The result of this study could serve as a baseline data to

improve the learning of the pupils.

Teachers. The result of this study may serve as an eye opener to create and

innovates new learning methods through modular learning and use or varied teaching

strategies.

Pupils. This study will help the pupils to develop their interest towards modular

learning and appropriate the importance of the learning even in the current crisis we

have experienced.

Parents. Who are directly concerned with the education of their children.

Future Researcher. The result of this study can be served as a basis for further

study on modular learning.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study involved in level of effectiveness of modular learning in grade 4 pupils.

The profile of respondents in terms of their sex and age.

Age is one factor to know the milestones achieved by the pupil. That the level of

the learning and/or knowledge of the pupils is enough for his/her age.

Sex appears that boys were among likely reported in being laziness and

tardiness. While girls were mostly the organized in studying.

The Dependent variables includes awareness, capabilities, and responsiveness.

Awareness is use as a variable if the pupil is being aware of the new blended

learning. Capabilities are used as a variable if the pupil is capable in handling the

modules given by him/her and can answer it in time. Responsiveness is used to know

how quickly the pupil response to the given tasks and/or assignment.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general problem addressed in this current study is that pupils are blending
new learning method that our country offered to continue the education of youths. The
study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 age; and,
1.2 sex

2. How do grade 4 pupils understand the effectiveness of modular learning

enrolled
in Jampason Elementary School in terms of:

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the different literature and studies both foreign and
localwhich have significantly guided the researcher to the development of the
theoreticalfoundation of this study.

Foreign Literature

According to Carry (1994), "the modular approach uses programmed materials

which are carefully organized in a logical sequence through which the learner
advances at his own pace, with each of his responses confirmed or corrected
immediately.

Robinson (1992) stated that individualized instruction and assessment are

closely associated with the concept of mastery learning when most students
master objectives at uniformly high level. It is a component of systematic
instruction which is concerned with understanding, improving and applying
learned principles at given time.

On the individual instruction, which is a strategy in the modular approach.

Lewis (1993) has started individual uniqueness, which is the extent to which
persons in the group are similar to one another, is measured by thinking of it as
collective expression of individualized learning.

Creager (1996) enumerated several advantages of the used of instructional

materials using the modular approach which are as follows: (1) Self instructional
units allows the teacher to focus on the students' deficiencies subject matter that
must be corrected; (2) Serve to eliminate the necessity of covering subject matter
already known to the students; and (3) Provide a way of assessing the student's
progress in learning.

Local Literature

Camarao (1990) believes that the instructional materials were the answer the
needs of developing countries lie the Philippines with inadequate logistics and
rapidly increasing school population. Instruction could be individualized and
from it, students learn even when they are already out of school. He stated that
the writers of the supplementary instructional materials should state the
objectives in terms of learner's behavior and skills.

According to Cesareno (1993), teaching school children to read and to learn

without the necessary books and others instructional materials is like teaching
them how to swim without giving them the benefit of actual experience to swim in
a body of water. He added that the seriousness of the textbook problem strikes
deep into the educational program. The importance of textbook and the
instructional materials is to facilitate learning and to make teaching more
effective.

Torres (1994) states that the art of teaching embraces the act of providing
adequate resource materials rather than mere dissemination of information. The
classroom therefore must be made a place in which every student can perform
the act-of delivery. Sufficient instructional materials should be provided to the
students to ensure meeting of concepts. Learning is a process wherein the
learners are involved. A learner learns from what he feels and what he thinks.
Personal experiences are learning that are complete and lasting.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researcher utilized the descriptive method using quantitative approaches in

gathering information about the present condition. To define the descriptive type of
research, Creswell (1994) stated that descriptive research as a purposive process of
gathering, analyzing, classifying, and tabulating data about prevailing condition,
practices, beliefs, processes, trends, and cause-effect relationships and then making
adequate and accurate interpretation about such data with or without the aid of
statistical methods.
A descriptive type of research according to Creswell (1994) involves the
collection of data to answer questions concerning the current status of the subjects in
the study. It is designed to gather information or conditions existing at a particular period
of time. The focus of the whole process is on the discovery of theory on comparison or
contrast of the findings.

Research Setting

The study was conducted in Barangay Jampason, Initao, Misamis Oreintal. The
researcher focuses only on random pupils enrolled in Jampason Elementary School and
their parents/guardians of the above-mentioned barangay.
Initao, officially the Municipality of Initao is a 3rd class municipality in the province
of Misamis Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of
32,370 people.
It is seated about 39 kilometres (24 mi) west of the provincial capital of Cagayan
de Oro City, 29 kilometres (18 mi) east of Iligan City, and about 767 kilometres (477 mi)
south-south-east of Philippine capital, Manila.

Research Instrument

The instrument used in a researcher-made questionnaire checklist to gather the

needed data for the study.

Data Gathering Procedure

The first step prior to data gathering is to make a request letter addressed to the
Dean and research Instructor. Upon approval, the researcher retrieves the request
letter. The researcher will give enough time to gather the data from the pupils enrolled in
Jampason Elementary School as well as to their parents/guardians. After the data
gathering, the researcher now collected it for tallying the scores and to apply the statical
treatment to be used with the study.

Statical Treatment of Data

1. Frequency and Percentage Distribution used in the interpretation of the

respondents information as age and sex.

2. Mean was used to determined how do respondents perceived the effectiveness of

modular learning in grade 4 pupils.
