CHAPTER II
Health
Health in simplest definition is the ‘general condition of the body’ (2). On the
other hand, it is also described by an online article that “the word ‘health’ refers to a
state of complete emotional and physical well-being.” (4) The World Health
officially defined it as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (3) Then afterwards, “in 1986, they further
clarified that health is: ‘A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health
continuously growing. It prevents a person to his or her daily life routine. “Disease
means something is wrong with our body and that we feel unwell or malfunction of the
body.” (5) That’s the reason why we need to know the importance of good health care.
The word health origins from an “Old English hælþ ‘wholeness, a being whole, sound
or well’ and Old Norse heill ‘healthy’." (1) Having a good health or being healthy
creates opportunities to everyone, and builds positive out-look in life, “Better health is
central to human happiness and well-being.” (7) It also have an impact to different
areas, other than personal growth, because “It also makes an important contribution to
economic progress, as healthy populations live longer, are more productive, and save
more.” (7) “Your health is at the center of your life. Every part of your life relies on
you having good health. When you have low energy, it is difficult to: perform at work

if you are too tired to be productive” (6), which can limit the capability of anyone that
“There are five (5) dimensions of health: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual
and social.” (8) though most cases fall under the mental health. Mental Health is defined
as “our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and
act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through
adulthood.” (9) It is how we think or respond on a situation that helps in our life,
examples are: decision-making, strategical planning, and etc. It is important since we use
active lifestyle. It is harder to define mental health than physical health, because, in many
improvements in testing, however, some signs of some types of mental illness are now
becoming "visible" in CT scans and genetic testing.” (4) Years passed by, and modern
health. “Technology has opened a new frontier in mental health support and data
collection.” (10) Different machines was invented, many mediums are being used, and
numerous methods are practice after a decade. Just by recognizing the early symptoms in
having mental illness and identifying the solution to it, had a great impact and a great
help in medical field. Below are some of early warning signs that a person undergoes

Mental Health Problems are merely caused by factors, that influence an individual
in either physical, mental, and social. “There is no single cause for mental health
environmental factors.” (14) “These can be summarized as: The social and economic
environment: Including parasites that exist in an area, or pollution levels; The person's
characteristics and behaviors: Including the genes that a person is born with and their
lifestyle choices” (4) If mental health problems doesn’t take seriously, it will result into:

problems can cause people to be alienated from their peers because of perceived

unattractive personality traits or behaviors. They can also cause anger, fear, sadness and
feelings of helplessness if the person does not know or understand what is happening. In
the long-term, mental health disorders can drive a person to commit suicide. According to
the National Institute for Mental Health, over 90 percent of suicides have depression or
another mental disorder as factors.” (14) “If chronic illness affects a person's ability to
complete their regular tasks, this may lead to depression and stress” (4) Mental illness
should not be ignored as it affects millions of lives. “One in four people in the world will
be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450
million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the
leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Treatments are available, but nearly
two-thirds of people with known mental disorder never seek help from a health
professional.” (12)

creating an environment that supports mental health. An environment that respects and
protects basic civil, political, socio-economic and cultural rights is fundamental to mental
health. Without the security and freedom provided by these rights, it is difficult to
maintain a high level of mental health. National mental health policies should be

it's overcoming depression, anxiety or eating disorders.” (15) It said that depression and
stress has great effect on kids, “’This has impact on kids who we see clinically who fail

this mental illness. Most probably the reasons are because of the family, financial, or
academical problems, and might include peer pressure. Schools are implementing

their time writing applications for funding to do research, as well as writing scientific
papers to report the findings of their research. In addition, they spend time presenting
their research in oral or poster form to other scientists at group meetings, institutional

The purpose of academic research is to seek the truth and new knowledge which

job performance. Faculty members who are not active in research probably use outdated
teaching materials that may not meet the needs of our fast-changing society.
Another benefit of attending a university with strong research ties is the potential for a
level student. These are the students who work alongside professors for research work,
learning side-by-side as partners while students are given the unique chance to become

Academic Performance
The relation between mental health and Academic performance has been reported
variously in different studies. The present research aims to study the Relation between
Mental health and Academic Performance in athletic and non-athletic Students of the
Islamic Azad University Ahvaz branch, Iran. For this purpose, 200 students Includes 100
athletic and 100 non-athletic were selected via random cluster sampling method. In order
to collect data, the Goldberg general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used. The nature
of motivation and learning strategy use is vital to improving student learning outcomes.

were based on a single behavioral aspect and/or small sample sizes, there is currently no
quantification of the interplay of these factors. Here, we study the academic performance
among a cohort of 538 undergraduate students forming a single, densely connected social
network. Our work is based on data collected using smartphones, which the students used
as their primary phones for two years. The availability of multi-channel data from a
single population allows us to directly compare the explanatory power of individual and
social characteristics.
