1. Answer in brief any two questions. [2X2 = 4]
a. Why is the kinetic friction less than the limiting friction?
b. A man drops his briefcase in an elevator but it does not fall to the floor. What can be concluded about the situation?
c. When a large heavy truck collides with a passenger car, the occupants of the car are more likely to be hurt than the
truck driver. Why?
2. Answer any one question. [4X1= 4]
a. State and prove the principle of conservation of linear momentum.
b. State Newton’s second law of motion. Show that Newton’s first and third laws of motion are contained in the second law.
3. Solve all numerical. [4X2 = 8]
a. A light rope is attached to a block with mass 4 kg that rests on a frictionless horizontal surface. The horizontal rope passes
over a frictionless pulley and a block with mass m is suspended from the other end. When the blocks are released, the
tension in the rope is 10 N. Draw free body diagram and calculate the acceleration of either block and mass m of the
hanging block.
b. A bullet of mass 10 gm travelling horizontally with a velocity of 300 m/s strike a block of wood having mass 290 gm
which rests on a horizontal floor. After impact, the block bullet move together and come to rest when the block has
travelled a distance of 5 m, Calculate the coefficient of sliding friction between the block and the floor.

1. Answer in brief any two questions. [2X2 = 4]
a. Why does a heavy rifle not kick as strongly as a light rifle using the same cartridges?
b. Explain how Newton’s first law of motion follows the second law.
c. Is friction a necessary evil? Explain.
2. Answer any one question. [4X1= 4]
a. Define angle of friction and angle of repose. Obtain an expression to relate them.
b. State Newton’s laws of motion. Show that Newton’s first law gives qualitative measurement of force and second law
gives quantitative measurement of force.
3. Solve all numerical. [4X2 = 8]
a. A light rope is attached to a block with mass 1 kg that rests on a frictionless horizontal surface. The horizontal rope passes
over a frictionless pulley and a block with mass 2kg is suspended from the other end. The blocks are released from the
rest. Draw free body diagram and calculate the acceleration of both block and tension in the rope.
b. A bullet of mass 20 gm travelling horizontally at 100 m/s embeds itself in the centre of a block of wood of mass 1 kg
which is suspended by light vertical string 1 m in length. Calculate the maximum inclination of the string to the vertical.

b. A cricketer lowers his hand while catching balls. Why?
c. If action and reaction are always equal and opposite, why don’t they always cancel each other and leave no force for
acceleration of the body?
2. Answer any one question. [4X1= 4]
a. State and prove the principle of conservation of linear momentum.
b. State the laws of limiting friction. How can you verify them experimentally?

a. A block of mass of 3 kg, on a smooth plane inclined at an angle of 30 0 to the horizontal, is connected by a light string
passing over a small frictionless pulley to a second block of mass 2 kg hanging vertically. Find the acceleration and
tension on the string.
b. A 550 N Physics student stands on a bathroom scale in an elevator. As the elevator starts moving the scale reads 450 N.
Draw free body diagram of the problem and find the magnitude and direction of the acceleration of the elevator.
