out) MP.2, MP.8

KY.3.OA.8 Use various strategies to solve two-step word problems using the four
operations (involving only whole numbers with whole number answers).
Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental
computation and estimation strategies including rounding. MP.1, MP.4

Objective I can use an online program to design a poster that shows an example of
or mathematics being used in the real world.
Learning
Target I can create a two-step word problem relating to the real-world situation I chose,
solve the equation, and include this on my poster creatively.

Detailed Students will download the program, Paintbrush, to their computer and open the
descriptio application. Students will choose to create a 600 x 800 file. After choosing the
n of size, students will take the time to choose a real-world situation in which they see
activity mathematics being used. The students could choose to focus on situations such as
exercising, shopping or the use of money, sports, cooking, and many other real-
world examples of math in everyday life. A two-step word problem will need to
be created by the student, as well as the student must solve their own created
word problem. I will check with students on their ideas and their word problems
before they begin working with the graphics program. After I have approved,
students will create a poster showing that math can be found everywhere. Their
poster should be themed around their chosen real-world math example. They will
be graded on creativity, use of tools, their word problem, and its answer. I expect
students to include a background, two images relating to their poster’s theme, the
word problem, and the answer to the word problem. No work should be shown
on the poster students are creating. Once each student was finished creating their
poster, they would save their work and email it to me. The posters would be
printed off and posted around the room. The next lesson would consist of
students walking around the room and solving their peers’ real-world two-step
word problems.

What were The most interesting part of the activity I designed was the number of tools
the things available to me. Through the program, Paintbrush, there were plenty of ways to
that you create drawings on the poster. This included having a straight line that could be
found any color the user preferred, a curved line that the user could color and curve in
interesting any place they desired, and shapes that could be filled in which helped in keeping
and/or my drawings symmetrical. The activity was most frustrating due to the typing
frustrating mechanism. To type, students would need to type one sentence at a time, as the
as you text will extend past their poster if too many words are included. The typing
designed function also does not allow students to see previews of the text fonts until it was
the applied to the text. This feature was a bit inconvenient, especially for young
activity children. The paint bucket feature also seemed to be a bit frustrating as there
were times that shapes, I had made were not closed, so the color I was using was
made the entire background. This also messed up the text, causing me to redo the
entire poster as the text is not editable after it is on the poster.

How To reduce frustration and increase interest in my activity, I allow students a time
might you period to use the program before we work on this activity. Possibly, weeks in
modify the advance, students could download this program and have times to use it as small
activity to breaks from teaching. It could also be used if students are forced to have indoor
reduce any recess due to weather situations. This would allow students to make mistakes and
frustration learn to overcome these mistakes. It would also give students the opportunity to
and ask me questions about using the program and discover more about using the
increase program than maybe I even know. By using the program before the assignment, I
interest? feel students will become more excited when they learn that we are using it in the
classroom to complete an activity.
What can For students with special learning needs, I could adjust the assignment by
you do to providing students a modified keyboard when needed. Although typing does not
make the play the biggest role in this activity, some students may need a modified
activity keyboard that is color coded or has larger keys to better help them in typing.
work for Students struggling in using the computer mouse may also have a modified
students mouse that includes a trackball, helping them in completing the lesson. The
with activity could also be modified to have students work with a partner. This would
special allow students with special learning needs to have a peer with them to help in
learning understanding the concepts presented in this activity. I may also work with these
needs? students in a small group while the class independently works. The purpose of
pulling these students into a small group would be to discuss with them the
different scenarios math is used in the real world and to help them to decide on
the focus for their poster. I could also help the students during this time to create
their two-step word problem and solve it. This leaves students to design and
explore the program, Paintbrush, on their own. This also allows for these students
to accomplish the assignment independently, causing the students to be prouder
and feel more successful in the completion of their posters.
What can The activity can be adjusted for gifted students by allowing the inclusion of
you do to multiple word problems on the poster. This would allow students that finish the
make the first problem quickly to continue working on the activity. Gifted students may
activity also be challenged to include certain vocabulary terms for certain operations or
more may be asked to only use certain operations in their word problem. For instance,
engaging a gifted student may not be allowed to use addition or subtraction for their word
for gifted problem but must find a way to create a two-step word problem that involves
students? multiplication and division. These students could also be challenged to use more
difficult real-world situations, such as money or shopping situations. This would
challenge students to work with simple decimals within the operations. This
could also lead to these students working with rounding at the teacher’s
discretion. Lastly, gifted students could be challenged in working with a partner
that does not quite understand two-step word problems or how to involve math in
the real world. This would give these gifted students the opportunity to take the
role of a teacher and help in explaining to their peers this concept in a different
way.
How could This activity could be adapted for all grades by changing the central math
you adapt concept being focused on. In any grade, teachers can discuss with students that
this mathematics can be found within the real world. They can discuss sharing,
activity for money or shopping, exercising, working, chores, building, farming, painting, and
different many other activities and occupations that involve math elements. The change to
grades and the activity comes in the creation of the poster. For kindergarteners, they will not
subject understand two-step word problems, or word problems in general. This activity
areas? can be adjusted for kindergarteners by having students to focus on one operation,
addition or subtraction, and represent this problem on the poster. This can be
done by having students to write the equation and represent it through pictures.
The posters can still be printed and hung on the wall for other members of the
class to check and observe their peers’ work. For fifth graders, the activity would
need to be more challenging as they have already worked with two-step word
problems. Fifth graders could be asked to create a short story with their poster
demonstrating the use of all the operations in a word problem. In relation to the
fifth-grade standard discussing size measurements, fifth grade students could also
choose a real-world situation in which a certain measurement is used. Students
would then be asked to create a word problem in which this measurement must
be converted to a larger unit. This allows students to work with multi-step word
problems on a deeper level while also allowing students to take notice to the
relationship of units and measurements. (KY.5.MD.1 Convert among different size
measurement units (mass, weight, liquid volume, length, time) within one
system of units (metric system, U.S. standard system and time). MP.3, MP.8)
