CENTER
Writing Center at Salem State named to Top 100 Nationwide

Salem, MA --- Best-Selling author, Stephen King, will be an honorary guest speaker at

an event in recognition of the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center at Salem State University.

The Mary G. Walsh Writing Center at Salem State University has been named a

top 10 writing center in Massachusetts and a top 100 writing center in the United States

by Best Colleges. The top colleges with the best writing centers are ranked based on

several factors, including the ability to help graduate and undergraduate students,

English as a Second Language (ESL) services, and whether they offer multilingual

assistance. To honor this great accomplishment, an award presentation and celebration

event is being held at the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts on

Tuesday, October 20th at 5 P.M. in Salem, Massachusetts.

According to the writing center’s mission statement, “The mission of the Mary G.

Walsh Writing Center is to provide assistance to all writers seeking to advance their

writing abilities. We acknowledge that writing is a powerful tool, and our goal is to foster

a community of strong and confident writers at our university.”

The presentation will be run by James Peyser, the Massachusetts Secretary of

Education. Accepting the recognition on behalf of the writing center are John Keenan,

the President of Salem State University, Dr. Al Deciccio, Director of the writing center,
and Natalia Pagan-Suarez, the Student-Tutor representative. As part of the

presentation, complimentary signed copies of King’s book, “On Writing: A Memoir of the

Craft”, will be presented to all current tutors of the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center.

“Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or

making friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your

work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting

over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy.” a quote taken from King’s book “On Writing:

A Memoir of the Craft”.

Admission to this event is free and open to the public, but reservations must be

made through eventbrite.com/SSUKing.
