Programme : B.E. Date : 15/03/2019

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.30am to 12.30pm
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 6603 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 Define Slenderness ratio.
2 What are the possible failure modes in an axially loaded column?
3 What is the effective length of compression member?
4 What are the assumptions made in Euler’s analysis?
5 How does the behaviour of compression member differs based on its length?
6 Why do compression flanges required lateral support?
7 What are the different types of stiffeners provided in a plate girder?
8 What is web crippling?
9 Where bearing stiffeners are provided?
10 Define flange splices.

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) Design a laced column with two channels back to back of length 10m to carry (13)
an axial factored load of 1400kN.The column may be assumed to have
restrained in position but not in direction at both ends (hinged ends)
(or)
b) Design a built up column for a length of 3.5m to support a working load of (13)
3500KN. The column is effectively held at both ends and restrained in
direction at one of the ends.

12 a) Explain the step by step design procedure for design of battened column as (13)
per codel provision.
(or)
b) A Built up column consists of ISHB 400@77.40 kg/m with one 300mm x (13)
12mm flange plate on each side. The column carries an axial load of 2600kN.
Design a gusseted base if the column is supported on concrete pedestal with a
bearing pressure of 5 N/mm2

13 a) A steel column ISHB 400 @ 759.3 N/m is subjected to a factored axial load (13)
of 2000 kN. Design the slab base plate for the column and base plate are
machined and the concrete footing is M 20 grade.
(or)
b) Explain the step by step design procedure for design of plate girder as per (13)
codel provision.
14 a) Design a laterally unsupported beam simply supported over a span of 2 m. It (13)
carries a UDL of 56 kN/m.
(or)
1
b) Design a simply supported beam of span 5m to carry a factored uniformly (13)
distributed load of 47kN/m.

15 a) Design a rolled steel I section for a simply supported beam with a clear span (13)
of 6m .It carries a UDL of 50kN/m exclusive of self weight of the girder. The
beam is laterally unsupported
(or)
b) Explain the elements of plate girders and splices. (13)
PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)
16 a) Design a gusseted base connection for a column ISHB 400 @ 822 N/m (15)
supporting an axial load of 675kN. The base plate is to rest on a concrete
pedestal of M20 grade concrete.
(or)
b) Design a welded plate girder using Fe 415 steel for a span of 25m to carry a (15)
load of 30kN/m.
