Programme : B.E. Date : 02/03/2018

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.20am to 12.20pm
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 6603 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 What do you mean by castellated beam?
2 What do you mean by curtailment of flanges?
3 What is web buckling?
4 What do you mean by shape factor?
5 Where bearing stiffeners are provided?
6 What is a purlin?
7 What are the components of roof truss?
8 What are the loads to be considered in the design of gantry girders?
9 What is the purpose of principal rafter in a truss?
10 Define (a) Pratt truss (b) saw tooth truss.

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) A welded plate girder of span 25 m is laterally restrained throughout its
length. It has to carry a load of 80 kN/m over the whole span besides its
(13)
weight. Design the girder without intermediate transverse stiffness.

(or)
b) Design a welded plate girder using Fe 415 steel for a span of 25m to carry a
load of 30KN/m. Assume suitable data.
(13)
12 a) A simply supported steel joist of 4m effective span is laterally supported
throughout. It carries a total UDL of 40KN (service load inclusive of self
(13)
weight). Design an appropriate section using steel of grade Fe 410.
(or)
b) Determine the design bending strength of ISLB 350 @ 486 N/m considering
the beam to be (a) laterally supported (b) laterally unsupported. The design
shear force V is less than design shear strength. The unsupported length of
beam is 3.0 m. Steel is of grade Fe 410. (13)

13 a) A steel beam is supported at its ends and carries a UDL of 55KN/m length
excluding self weight. The effective span of the beam is 8m. Design a suitable
section for the beam. Check the safety of the beam for web crippling and web
buckling. (13)
(or)
b) Desgin the purlin for the following specifications. Span of truss = 10m,
Pitch = one fifth of span, Spacing of truss = 4m, Spacing of Purlins = 2m, load
(13)
1
from roofing materials = 150N/m2, wind load = 1100N/m2. Use angle section

14 a) Calculate the dead load, live load and wind load at the nodes of a pinned end
fink truss with the following data : Span of truss = 16m, Rise of truss = 4m,
Spacing of truss = 4m,Self weight of purlin = 300N/m, Height of column =
10m,Roofing shall be of GI sheets. Building is located in Chennai. Use Fe 410
steel. (13)

(or)
b) Design a channel section (shape purlin placed on a sloping roof truss) with a
dead loaof 0.2 kN/m2 (cladding and insulation). A live load of 2.5 kN/m2 and
(13)
wind load of 1.5 kN/m2 (suction). The purlins are spaced 1.5 m c/c and span of
5 m, simply supported on a rafter at a slope of 15˚.

15 a) Explain in detail about the step by step procedure of design of Gantry girders.
Also explain the loads you would consider in the design.
(13)
(or)
b) A symmetric trusses of span 15m and height 4m are spaced at 4.5m c/c.
Design the channel section purlin to be placed at 1.5m distance to resist
following loads. Weight of sheeting including bolt = 172 N/m2.
Live load =0.5 KN/m2. Wind load = 1.1KN/m2 (13)

PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16 a) Design a welded plate girder of span 30m to carry on superimposed load of 35

KN/m. Avoid use of bearing and intermediate stiffeners. Use Fe 415 steel.
(15)
(or)

b) Explain in detail about the step by step procedure of design of plate girders. (15)
