Lesson 2: Building Challenge #1 (Home, Shelter, or School)

Purpose and Objectives

The focus of this lesson is for students to be familiar with the concept of

purpose, and why constructed objects are designed with a purpose.
From the Alberta Program of Studies for Science:
 GLO: Students will identify the purpose of different components in a
personally constructed object or model and identify corresponding
components in a related object or model.
 SLO:
o Students will select appropriate materials, such as papers, plastics,
woods; and design and build objects based on the following

construction task:
 Construct model buildings (homes, garages, schools)
o Students will identify component parts of personally constructed
objects and describe the purpose of each part.
o Students will recognize that products are often developed for
specific purposes and identify the overall purpose for each model
and artifact constructed.
Students will review the vocabulary word – purpose.
Students will explore the purpose of a structure – schools, homes, garages.
Learning Objectives Students will select materials to build their own structure with.
Students will create their own structure with various materials.
Students will reflect on their building process.

Assessment Evidence
Formative assessment for this lesson will take place through teacher
observation of student participation throughout the lesson – this will be
recorded through anecdotal notes at the end of the lesson. Guiding
questions for observations may include:

 What are some of the parts that make up a structure?
 What are appropriate materials for building a structure?

5 minutes Introduction
 Teacher will read ‘If I Built a House’ by Chris Van
Dusen to students to introduce them to this week’s
challenge – structures
 Teacher will lead students through an initial
discussion
5 minutes Purpose of Structures
 Teacher will ask students to recall the purpose of
structures and discuss
15 minutes Planning *if a student finishes their
 Teacher will show students pictures of completed planning, they will be
structures (both real life and kid constructed) able to grab their
 Teacher will show students their planning page materials
and explain expectations
5 minutes Clean-Up and Prepare for Recess
 Teacher will ask students if they have any
questions
 Teacher will let students get ready for recess
15 minutes Recess
7 minutes Student Pack-Up (for the end of the day)
20 minutes Materials and Building
 Students will select their materials after the
teacher has viewed their plan
 Students will get build their structures
3 minutes Tidy-Up and Line Up for Gym
 Teacher will get students to tidy up their
workspaces and show that they are ready
 Students will line up for gym
30 minutes Gym
5 minutes Building and Reflection
 Students will add any finishing touches to their
structures
15 minutes Reflection
 Students will share their structures and a little bit
about it (if they feel comfortable)
10 minutes Clean-up and Closure
 Teacher will ask students if there are any questions
and explain their home challenge
 Students will get ready for the home time
