Activity 9 “Summarizing the kind of government”

1.- Government

Kind of Government: The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy in which the reigning
monarch does not make any open political decisions. All political decisions are taken by the
government and Parliament. This constitutional state of affairs is the result of a long history of
constraining and reducing the political power of the monarch, beginning with Magna Carta in
1215.

Characteristics: The Government of the United Kingdom, formally and commonly referred to as
Her Majesty's Government, is the central government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. The government is led by the prime minister, who selects all the other ministers.
The prime minister and their most senior ministers belong to the supreme decision-making
committee, known as the Cabinet.

Participants: As of 2019, there are around 120 government ministers supported by 560,000[10]
civil servants and other staff working in the 25 ministerial departments and their executive
agencies. There are also an additional 20 non-ministerial departments with a range of further
responsibilities.

2.- Prime Minister

Name: Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson

Functions:

The Prime Minister is the leader of Her Majesty’s Government and is ultimately responsible for the
policy and decisions of the government.

As leader of the UK government the Prime Minister also:

• Oversees the operation of the Civil Service and government agencies

• Chooses members of the government
• Is the principal government figure in the House of Commons

As Minister for the Union, the Prime Minister works to ensure that all of government is acting on
behalf of the entire United Kingdom: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

How is he/she elected:

In a general election, the U.K. is divided into 650 local areas called parliamentary constituencies,
each of which is represented by one member of parliament (MP) in the House of Commons.

All British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizens resident in the country and aged 18-years-old
or over on Dec. 12 will be able to vote. Britons living abroad — who have been registered to vote
in the U.K. in the last 15 years — will also be able to cast their ballot.

The total number of registered U.K. voters at the end of December 2018 was roughly 46 million,
according to the most recent data available from the Office for National Statistics.
3.- Current Monarch

Name: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary

Functions: The Monarch has a less formal role as 'Head of Nation'. The Sovereign acts as a focus
for national identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity; officially recognises
success and excellence; and supports the ideal of voluntary service.

How is he/she elected:

An elective monarchy is a monarchy ruled by an elected monarch, in contrast to a hereditary

monarchy in which the office is automatically passed down as a family inheritance. The manner of
election, the nature of candidate qualifications, and the electors vary from case to case.
Historically it is not uncommon for elective monarchies to transform into hereditary ones over
time, or for hereditary ones to acquire at least occasional elective aspects.

Age: 94 years

Years reigning: 68 years

4.- Parliament

Location: Parliament is bicameral but has three parts, consisting of the sovereign, the House of
Lords, and the House of Commons. The two houses meet in the Palace of Westminster in the City
of Westminster, one of the inner boroughs of the capital city, London.

Description of House of Lords: The House of Lords, formally known as The Right Honourable the
Lords Spiritual and Temporal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in
Parliament assembled, also known as the House of Peers and domestically usually referred to
simply as the Lords, is the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Description of House of Commons: The House of Commons, domestically often referred to simply
as the Commons, is the lower house and de facto primary chamber of the Parliament of the United
Kingdom. Like the upper house, the House of Lords, it meets in the Palace of Westminster.

The Commons is an elected body consisting of 650 members known as members of Parliament
(MPs). MPs are elected to represent constituencies by the first-past-the-post system and hold
their seats until Parliament is dissolved.
Activity 10 “Analysis of the movie The Queen”

Watch the assigned movie and answer the following questions:

1) What is the main topic of the movie?

Death of Diana Spencer and the public response to Diana's death complicates matters, when
people come out in droves to mourn her death.

2) Describe the historical context shown in the movie

The queen fights any attempts by the prime minister to change her mind about making a
statement about Diana's death. While in Scotland, she has a bit of an identity crisis, as she
realizes how much her own people dislike her because of her decision to remain discreet
about the death.

3) Write 3 facts mentioned in the movie

• Diana's death
• The public response to Diana's death complicates matters
• Eventually, she decides to go along with Tony Blair's advice, and submits to the public's
wishes.
4) How did the movie help you to understand better the historical event presented in it?
Knowing the public's reaction from the perspective of the royal family makes you put
yourself in their shoes.
Activity 11 “Discussing facts about education in your country”

1.- You first day at elementary school.

I was very scared but I fit in very well because I made friends quickly.

2.- The quality of your elementary education.

Currently it is easy to study the university because there are a large number of universities and
some are public so the fee is lower.

4.- The preparation of teachers in your school.

The teachers are well prepared, have high knowledge in the subject they teach and always seek to
enrich the class with their comments.

5.- All children attend to school in Mexico.

Not all children attend, there are few children in urban areas who do not attend school, but there
are rural areas where there are practically no schools.

6.- Higher education is expensive in Mexico.

Only private universities, but public universities are very accessible and grant scholarships to
people with limited resources.

7.- Educative system in Mexico need improvement.

They need to improve the system with which they are graded, they should qualify with a pure
exam but I think they also put homework to help more students graduate. In my opinion, this
affects the quality of the graduates of each faculty.
