(2) Assume suitable data if required and state the same

1. Draw a phase diagram showing the volurn:etric components of a compacted bituminous mix.
Define different volumetric parameters of the mix (06)

2. List the steps to be followed for design of bituminous mixes as per Marshall mix design
method. (06)

3. What are the main differences between Marshall method of compaction and Superpave
Gyratory compaction method? (06)

4. Explain what is meant by 'refusal Density". How to determine the refusal density of a loose
mix? Can you suggest a criterion on the basis of refusal density test to prevent rutting of
mixes? Can this method be used for determining target density for field compaction? (05)

5. Why do we calculate film thickness in a bituminous mix? How do we calculate it? (04)

6. In the performance grading of bituminous 'binders what are the tests specified for (a) rutting
of mixes (b) fatigue cracking of mixes (c) low temperature cracking of mixes? What are the
tests conducted to simulate aging of binders? What do you understand by PG62 -18? (06)

7. What do you understand by warm and cold mixes? What is the advantage of using warm mixes?
How are warm mixes designed? What are the limitations of warm mixes? (05)

8. What are the main parameters determined in the case of modified binders? Which of these
parameters are not generally determined for unmodified binders? (06)

9. Discuss the guidelines to be followed for c;fesign of mixes using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement
(RAP) (06)
