5. The standard penetration test results ofthe sand deposits at a site are given below:

Depth Nfield
1.5 7
3.0 8
4 ..5 14
6.0 12
7.5 16
9.0 18

The ground water table is located at 1.5 m below the ground surface. The dry and
saturated unit weight of sand is 17.5 and 20.0 kN/m3 , respectively. For a design
earthquake of magnitude, M ~ 7.5 and maximum ground acceleration, amax = 0.20g,
will liquefaction occur at the site?
Earthquake stress ratio (CRR) chart for an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 is given
below:
,,
"' Ncor Cyclic stress ratio
10 . 0.12
15 0.17.
20 0.23.
25 0.28

The stress reduction factor for depth can be estimated from the linear relationship
with depth and is given byrd = 1- 0.012z, where z is the depth in meters measured
from the ground surface. SPT correction factor, C can be estimated using the equation

given by C =

6. (a) A 200 mm diameter and 30m long pile carries 300 kN load at the top. Determine
the natural frequency of the pile vertical vibration. Given unit weight of concrete= 23
kN/m 3, Modulus of elasticity of the concrete= 2lx106 kN/m2 • [3]
(b) Natural frequency of.a model footing weighing 8.5 kN was estimated 1600 rpm but
while testing it was found 1000 q,m. Later soii investigation was carried out and that
a soft layer was present at some depth. Determine the stiffness (spring constant) of the
second layer if the estimation of stiffness of the first layer assumed to be correct. [3]
(c) A spring and dash pot are attached to a body weighing 140 N. The spring constant is
3.0 kN/m. The dashpot has a resistance of0.75 Nat a velocity of0.06 m/s. Determine
the damping factor of the system. [2]
(d) A spring mass system with viscous damping is displaced from its equilibrium position
and released. If the amplitude diminishes by 5% in· each· cycle, what is the damping
factor oft~e system? [2]
