Interview #1
I interviewed Becky Pugh from Lee Street Elementary School. Mrs. Pugh is my site
supervisor and she has allowed me to shadow her this semester. She has truly been a huge help.
Mrs. Pugh has been working in the Lee Street Elementary Media Center for five years.
She was a classroom teacher for twelve years before transitioning over to the Media Center. She
informed me the reaching for her moving on and getting her degree was due to the previous
Media Specialist wanting to retire. He felt that she would be a great candidate and encouraged
her to go back to school to get her degree. Mrs. Pugh received her Media Specialist degree from
Georgia Southern University. Mrs. Pugh’s job responsibilities are to keep and maintain all books
at Lee Street Elementary. She also has to monitor and keep track of the Destiny system which
helps keep track of all Lee Street books. Shelve books in the Media Center. She also helps
teachers find reading sources to use in the classrooms that go with a certain subject that they are
teaching. With technology responsibilities, she has to do technology once a month with staff
members as well as attend a technology meeting for herself so that she is able to train the staff.
Besides her daily responsibilities, she makes sure to meet the needs of her students, parents,
teachers, and staff members. To meet the needs of teachers during remote learning, Mrs. Pugh
has been answering emails, phone calls, and text messages to better help faculty and staff. She
finds information to help teachers with teaching effectively online. If a teacher comes to help to
ask about a certain topic, Mrs. Pugh goes online to find different resources for that teacher and
sends the information through an email. She also meets students and parents during remote
learning, Mrs. Pugh does not have any issues with helping parents who are having issues with
technology. Mrs. Pugh stated that most of her assistance has gone to the young grades because
they are new to using computers by themselves at home and having issues with turning in
assignments. She has created Google Classrooms for each classroom so that the students are able
to access any materials they may need for class or to know for the Media Center. Mrs. Pugh is
one busy lady and she gave an example of what a daily activity would look like. Mrs. Pugh’s
daily activities include pulling stories for the students to read as well as find a visual video the
students can watch to go along with the book. She tries to make sure the stories she picks are on
the students’ level so that they can comprehend what is being told. Besides just being the Media
Specialist she has many opportunities to impact technology throughout the school year. She even
joked that technology was her middle name. She stated that Lee Street Elementary’s Media
Center is the hub for technology. She gave an example of if we were to go to the school, we
would see all the laptops from distribution from the beginning of the school year is in the Media
Center. She gave another example of if we were in the building and a teacher stated they were
having internet issues she tries to figure out the program before having to put in a technology
ticket. Mrs. Pugh like anyone else has to deal with good and bad things about her job. The best
part of Mrs. Pugh’s job is the students. She loves to see their faces when they hear a funny part
of a story and seeing that they enjoy a certain book. She said she misses seeing the children
every day in the building due to the pandemic. Some challenges Mrs. Pugh faces are she is not
able to physically put her hands on the computers if students are having trouble at home. She
states it is harder to see what they are doing wrong if you aren’t face to face with them. She said
she also has a challenge with placing the books back on the shelves because it is a never-ending
process. Also ordering books is an issue because she never knows what books we have and need.
Overall, after interviewing Mrs. Pugh I see that she truly loves what she does on a daily
basis. I do see that she truly misses seeing her students face to face and can’t wait for them to
come back to the school. She showed me that a Media Specialist has many hats to fill and it’s up
to you to truly know how to handle the pressure. She makes sure she is there for everyone and I
