The 'AKEKE'E Hi, I'm Akeke'e and I am a honeycreeper.

I am a
small male insectivorous Hawaiian honeycreeper.
The adult females and males of my species are
greenish above and yellow below with a black
mask. The females colors are slightly duller colors.
Unlike the Amakihi, my species has a conical type
beek.
Where I Live
Me and my species are only found on the
upper waimea part of kauai. I live above

beak to pry open buds of the ohia leaves to find
insects like psyllids or spiders.

How My Habitat Changed

Over the years my ohia tree forests have
been dying. Thousands of acres of forests
with ohia trees are being threatened by a
disease. A new fungal disease known as
Rapid Ohia Death ( ceratocystic fimbriata)
was identified in Hawaii in 2014. The fungus
attaches and quickly kills ohia trees.
How Me And My Species Is Dying
Me and my species are dying because of multiple reasons. The first reason is because my
habitat is being destroyed by a disease called ceratocystic fimbriata. The second reason is
because of climate change. When air temperature rises, the mosquito zone moves up. By
the time the mosquito zone reaches my habitat, me and my species will probably be
extinct. The mosquitoes can carry dangerous diseases which will kill me and my species all
the way to extinction.

What Would Help Me To Survive

Me and my species could survive if Ohia trees weren't rapidly dying, we could better survive if
climate wasn't getting warmer, we could also beter survive if there were an abundance of our
favorite food.
