TOWARDS MODULAR  LEARNING

AN ACTION RESEARCH

I . Context and Rationale
The pandemic has gravely threatened the stability of the educational system. Hence,
several countries have enacted various methods to address this situation and continue
providing quality education to the students. The Department of Education in the Philippines has
implemented its efforts through the DepEd order (DO) no.012,s. 2020 “Adoption of basic
Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP)for School Year 2020-21 in the  light of the
COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, ”DepEd shall employ multiple Learning delivery modalities
(LDMs) to ensure the continued provision of learning opportunities to its learners, while
protecting the health and safety of both its personnel and learners. This can be done through
blended learning, distance learning in homeschooling.

Modular Learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-Learning Modules (SLM)

based on the most essential learning competencies (MELCS) provided by DepEd. The modules
include sections on motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide of both
teachers' and students' desired competencies. Most teachers will readily agree that
punctuality and substantial modular attendance of students in getting and retrieving the module
on time, have considerable contribution to better learning and promotional rate.  However, some
parents, who are the ones getting and returning the modules for their children, could not do this
on time for whatever reasons they have. Learning can be hard and difficult at times, and making
mistakes, receiving good feedback and support are important factors for continued
learning. Thus, the school, particularly the teachers, are apprehensive about the
students’ attitudinal changes towards modular learning. Hence, this research will be conducted
to determine what changes in attitudes the students have with modular learning.

II. Action Research Questions

This study will seek to answer the following questions:

1.    What is the immediate reaction of the respondents and their parents when the
lessons in the class were in a form of a module?
2.    Which modules were difficult to answer? Those written in English or in Filipino?
3.    How do they find the lessons in the module?
4.    What is their perception about modular lessons?
5.    What attitudinal changes are brought about by modular learning?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

The researcher will do some Intervention and Strategy:

1.    To visit the homes of the said parent/student with attendance problem in returning
the module on time so as to know the reasons behind it.
2.    Soliciting feedbacks from parents during the retrieval of the module.

IV. Action Research Methods

A. Participants and /or other Sources of Data

The Respondent of the study will be the Grade 7 students of Tomas Cabili Natonal High School
(TCNHS) enrolled in S.Y. 2020-21. Specifically, there are 11 sections of Grade 7 with more or
less 319 students enrolled. The seven sections under the researcher in Araling Panlipunan 7
will be the respondents.

B. Data Gathering Methods

When all permissions allowing the researcher to conduct a study from the Principal of Tomas
Cabili National High School, the gathering of data will begin.

Through the Grade 7 class advisers, the researcher questionnaires will be given to the parents
of the respondents for them to answer. Then when all questionnaires are retrieved, data will be
tabulated, analyzed and interpreted.

C. Ethical Considerations

Sampling Method and Research Design

The seven sections under the researcher in Araling Panlipunan 7 subject are the
respondents. This paper will be using a descriptive method or design. It will be correlative in
nature.

D. Permission Letter and Informed Consent Letter

To safeguard the ethical aspect of this study, a letter will be sent to the school Principal allowing
her to conduct the research in the school where the researcher is currently teaching. After
permission is granted, the researcher questionnaire will be administered to the respondents.
The respondents will be briefed and be informed about the study. They will be told that their
honest and voluntary answers will be treated with utmost confidentiality. Their answer will not
affect their grades, so they are free to answer the questionnaires.

E. Validity of Research Instrument

In conducting this study, questionnaire will be drafted, Some ideas on what items to consider in
the questionnaire are due to some researches already made. Their studies have helped shape
the questionnaire to be used in this present study. Both questionnaires underwent several
corrections and enhancement. One of these was to phrase all items in declarative form rather
than in interrogative form. Another one was to consider items that were relevant and important
to the study. It is quantitative in methods that will be use in analyzing the data gathered for the
research. That will be 75% of the total respondent of the 7 section in Grade 7.

V. Action research Work Plans And Timelines

The researchers will conduct the action research using the following Gantt chart:

ACTION TO BE TAKEN WEEK 1 WEEK 2 WEEK 3 @ 4 WEEK 5@6

Permission to Conduct Action
Research from School Principal
Validation of the questionaire

Conducting of the questionnaire to

the respondent give to their parents
in hand through the Grade 7 adviser.
Collecting, Retrieving, tabulating the
data by the parent upon returning to
the Grade 7 adviser

Analyzing and interpreting data,

drawing conclusions, reflections and
implications
Submission of Full Action Research
Revisions
Submission of Recommendation to
the School Head

The action research will be implemented 6 weeks or 1 month and 2 weeks. In the first
week will be the permission to conduct action research from the school principal and validation
of questionnaire with the help of Statistician, In the second Week will be the conducting of the
questionnaire to the respondent give to their parents in hand through the Grade 7 adviser, that
is one week round in getting and retrieving the module by parents, while in collecting,
Retrieving the data by the parent upon returning to the Grade 7 adviser it spent 2 weeks,
because of tabulating which cost enough time. The last two weeks will spent analyzing,
interpreting, drawing the conclusions, reflections and implications, it will follow the submission
of the full Action Research, some revisions, and the last step is submission of Recommendation
to the school Head.

VI. Cost Estimates

This action research will incur the following expenses:

Validator’s, or Statistician Fee (2,000) 2,000.00

Printing materials of the Questionaire 300.00
Personal Expenses and other overhead expenses 200.00
Total 2,500.00

In spending much fee for the Statistiscians, they are the expert in the field of reliability of

the result, than printing of materials of the Questionaire and the personal Expenses of

the Researcher.

I. Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

The submission of the Full Result Action research will be submitted to the school Head

for safe Keeping, and for references by future researcher for further study inclined to the

research. The Full Result of the Action Research will also be presented by the researcher

in the conference in school and in district.
