Purpose of Experiment / Equipment: Briefly describe your Chem-E-Car’s design, intended mode for
operation (source of power), intended mode for control (stopping), and major hazards and their control.
Describe your car’s design:
Power source:
The power source used in this car is Electrochemical / voltenic cell with copper cathode and
Magnesium Anode with CuS O 4 1 M electrolyte solution
Reduction:C u2+¿
( aq ) + 2e →Cu (s) ¿
The voltage generated by 1.5 volts, CuSO_4 and MgSO_4 is an environmentally friendly
chemical because it is used as an important nutrient fertilizer in the formation of sugars,
chlorophyll, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and oils, plays an important role in the process of
respiration and photosynthesis, increasing resistance plants against disease and drought and
Preventing the fall of flowers and ovaries.
additional information :
In the journal, the reaction used is the reaction between Zn as an anode and Cu as a cathode,
but during the experiment we experienced some problems so we decided to change the anode
to Mg and still using CuSO4 as the electrolyte solution. the use of Mg as a anode is based on
standard reduction value data, from these data the standard potential value of Cu 2+ | Cu ||
Mg2+ | Mg is 2.71 volts, higher than Cu2+ | Cu || Zn2+ | Zn where the default potential value is
1.1 volts.
Stopping mechanism:
Stopping mechanism of this car uses the reaction of HCl and Magnesium, Magnesium is used as
a link to the flow of electric power, HCl is flowed using a small pipe to magnesium, then let it
react then magnesium will separate, then the electric power dies. To adjust the stop time, the
thickness of the magnesium is made constant and change the concentration of HCl so that the
stop time can be set according to the travel time that will be done.
Reaction:
Safety measures:
Use personal protective equipment when using irritant chemicals
cover all electrical components
to prevent splashes and spills we do not use a syringe but instead use a closed cylinder that has
a valve to enter the HCl solution, and also uses 2 containers
The box mechanism stops and the battery is closed so as to minimize the risk

Fabrication & Operation Additional Hazard Detail CheckList: Check all hazards that are likely to be encountered during your Chem.-Car construction and
operation. List the major source(s) of the hazard and describe how the hazard(s) will be controlled. If both construction and hazard columns are checked in an
individual row, then the hazards should be identified separately for both the construction and operation
(b) No improper disposal of chemicals at the conclusion of the competition. All chemicals shipped to the competition site must
be disposed of in a safe and environmental fashion following all local, state and national regulatory measures. Chemical
disposal should not pollute the environment
Disallowed Vehicles: All of the items listed below are not allowed.
Item Explanation
(a) Flames and/or smoke Both inside and outside the vehicle, including commercial internal combustion engines.
See Chem-E-Car Rules for using commercial internal combustion engines.
(b) Liquid Discharge Liquid may not be discharged under normal operating conditions.
(c) Open and/or Containing chemicals having an NFPA rating of 2 or greater.
improperlysecured
containers No open containers allowed at the starting line or during the operation of your vehicle. All
containers with these chemicals must have secure lids and must be secured to the vehicle.
All containers brought to the starting line must have lids, be properly labeled, and proper
personal protective equipment must be used.
(d) Chemical pouring atstarting Any chemicals with an NFPA rating of 2 or greater. Use a holding vessel on vehicle, with
line valve, to load starting chemicals.
(e) Regulated Chemicals A number of chemicals are listed by OSHA as a special hazard. See list below. OSHA has
a special regulation for each chemical. See www.osha.gov for details.
(f) Highly Reactive / Unstable Any chemical, raw material, intermediate or product with an NFPA reactivity / instability
Chemicals rating of 4.
(g) Hydrogen peroxide Hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of greater than 30% are not allowed.
Vehicle Primary Hazards Checklist: Check the left hand column box if the hazards listed below exist on
the vehicle. Then check the applicable means of control for each hazard.
Hazard
Control
(check if present)
(a) Pressure Anything greater than 1 psig? Must meet all requirements below:
Emergency relief device set to no more than 1.1 times max. operating
pressure. Relief sizing calculations must be provided.
(e) Temperature Any exposed surface greater than 150 deg. F or under 32°F?
(f) Electrical Exposed wiring and electrically energized components are ignition,
electrocution, and a shorting / fire hazard. Alligator clips and twisted wire
connections are not allowed – use binding posts or banana plugs for a more
secure connection.
(g) Mechanical Any fast moving parts (meshing gears, belts or chains) that are pinch hazards?
(i) Biohazards No biohazards greater than biohazard level 1 either during the design,
development, preparation or competition phases of your car.

Power Source
During the electrochemical reaction takes place Mg will be oxidation because it has a lower
reduction potential than copper, in the presence of S042- from the electrolyte solution and
the oxidation results from Mg in the form of Mg 2+, the two ions will bind to form Mgso4 and
Cu 2+ from the electrolyte solution will capture the electrons released from the anode
(magnesium) and form a Cu solid then stick to the cathode (copper)
Stopping Mechanisme
Mg+ 2 HCl→ Mg Cl 2+ H 2
because the concentration used is a maximum of 0.25 M so that the amount of hydrogen
and heat production becomes small and slow (safe to do)
