PREFACE
The Second hiternational Conference on Fast Sea Transportation - FAST'93 is arranged in
Yokohama by the Society o f Naval Architects o f Japan.
High speed marine vessels are gaining in commercial importance in the areas o f both passen-
ger and cargo transportation, and various technical problems must be overcome, particularly to
increase speed and size. Moreover, it is necessary to arrange the operating conditions in order to
realize a new era o f fast sea transportation.

FAST'93 aims to help shape the future course o f the design and operation o f high speed
marine vehicles by providing a conference f o r intemational cooperation and the exchange o f
information. We are pleased to be able to provide this volume o f Proceedings with balanced cov-
erage o f a l l fields related to high speed marine vessels such as hull concept and seaworthiness,
material and structural strength, propulsion and machinery, safety navigation and transport econ-
omy. We would like to thank the authors, the session chairmen and the members o f the national
and intemational committees f o r their efforts and contributions to the Conference. We hope you
w i l l find the Proceedings inspiring and f r u i t f u l f o r stimulating active discussions.

The FAST conference is gaining a reputation as one o f t h e most high academical level interna-
tional conferences conceming high speed marine vessels. We also hope that FAST'93 w i l l con-
tribute an enhanced reputation that promotes the continuation o f this kind o f international
cooperation in the future.

Kazuo Sugai
Chairman. Organizing Committee
